David Lee Roth
David Lee Roth (born October 10, 1954 in Bloomington , Indiana ) is an American rock singer . He was from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s and has been the singer of the hard rock formation Van Halen again since 2007 .
Career
In the hard rock band Van Halen, Roth was the sex symbol of the glamor rock band of the time, with artistic insoles, skin-tight gymnastic pants and an erotic-narcissistic show , which became particularly popular with their cover version of You Really Got Me from 1978. After gaining fame as the singer of Van Halen, he started a solo career in 1985 with the EP Crazy from the heat ( platinum ) produced by Van Halen producer Ted Templeman . The titles Easy Street, California Girls , Just a Gigolo and Coconut Grove were extremely successful and heralded the end of his time at Van Halen. After his departure, Van Halen were also successful with their new singer Sammy Hagar (ex- Montrose ). The first album without Roth they named in reference to the singer who left the dispute 5150 . The title refers to an American police code for a "runaway homicidal psychopaths" and also the name for later Eddie Van Halen 's Signature -Gitarrenverstärker Peavey 5150 .
Roth then completed a world tour in 1986 with the musicians Steve Vai , Billy Sheehan and Gregg Bissonette in support of his album Eat 'Em and Smile . His old band colleagues from Van Halen then named their next album again with an allusion OU 812 (readable as Oh, you ate one, too ).
Roth excelled in particular through an extroverted stage show. The latter may be due to the hyperactivity he was diagnosed with in childhood . Rumors from this period say that David Lee Roth was insured against potential paternity lawsuits with Lloyd’s in England .
The second album, Skyscraper , was produced in 1987 by Roth together with Steve Vai and recorded with the same line-up as Eat 'Em And Smile and released in 1988. In January 1991 the Bob Rock produced album A Little Ain't Enough was released . The studio band included Gregg Bissonette (drums), Brett Tuggle (keyboards), Matt Bissonette (bass), Steve Hunter (guitar) and Jason Becker (guitar). Becker had to leave the band after the recordings because of his illness of ALS .
Roth's band consisted for the European tour, which began on February 22, 1991 in Glasgow , from the guitarists Joe Holmes ( lead guitar ) and Desi Rexx ( rhythm guitar ), the bassist Todd Jensen and Gregg Bissonette and Brett Tuggle. The group also came to Germany as part of this tour (e.g. April 6, 1991 Philipshalle Düsseldorf ) to promote the album. A Little Ain't Enough was well behind the sales of the previous albums.
Roth reoriented himself and launched Your Filthy Little Mouth in 1994, a compilation of clearly bluesy and soulful pieces. The album was produced by Nile Rodgers , guitar virtuoso of the disco veterans Chic . But Your filthy little Mouth also fell short of commercial expectations; it was Roth's last release on Warner Bros. The accompanying tour even flopped, Roth had to move from large halls to small clubs and perform in front of fewer than 500 listeners. 1995 David Lee Roth retired to Las Vegas for a guest appearance. Together with the 15-piece orchestra Non-Stop Blues Bustin 'Mambo Slammers , which also included saxophone legend Edgar Winter , Roth played songs from the Van Halen and DLR repertoire in blues and soul style every evening in the famous Bally's Ballroom .
For the 1996 greatest hits collection Van Halen - Best of Volume 1 , David Lee Roth met his ex-colleagues again to record the pieces Me wise magic and Can't get this stuff no more in the studio . This liaison was short-lived as the two Van Halens and Roth had a verbal argument at a press conference following their acclaimed appearance at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, which meant another end of their collaboration.
In 1997 Roth released the greatest hits album Best of David Lee Roth , which also contained a new title: Don't Piss me off . The song opened the album and was recorded by Roth, Steve Hunter (guitar), Brett Tuggle (keyboard), Freebo (bass) and Jack White ( drums ) in the recording studio " The Alley " in North Hollywood . In the same year his autobiography Crazy From the Heat was published .
In 1998, Roth released another album with a new band, simply titled DLR Band . He could not build on his successes with Van Halen. In the summer of 2002 Hagar and Roth successfully toured the USA together as Heavyweight Champions of Rock'n Roll . This tour was called Sans Halen by fans . Diamond Dave appeared in 2003, and Roth mostly sings songs by other artists. Curiously, his current guitarist Brian Young has played in a Van Halen cover band for several years. In the fall of 2005, Roth took over from the cult radio presenter Howard Stern at K-Rock in several regions of the USA (including New York) .
The collaboration with David Lee Roth as moderator and the broadcaster CBS has since been terminated by the CBS. Roth contributed the vocals on two tracks of the Van Halen tribute album Strummin 'With The Devil - in bluegrass style, accompanied by banjo and violin.
He sees himself more as an “entertainer” than a “only singer”. Accordingly, he often enriches his stage show with chats à la Dean Martin and (with his partner Pete Angelus) was in charge of the comedy videos Jump , Panama , Hot For Teacher , California Girls , Just A Gigolo , Yankee Rose and Goin 'Crazy responsible.
In early 2007 Roth and Van Halen were reconciled . A tour with Roth was announced for the first half of 2007, but was postponed because Eddie Van Halen had to go to a rehab clinic. After his recovery, the tour was completed between September and December 2007 in the USA and Canada. Almost all concerts were sold out.
In January 2011 Van Halen went into the studio with David Lee Roth to record the first joint album since 1984 , which was released in February 2012 under the name A Different Kind of Truth .
