David Saint-Jacques (born January 6, 1970 in Québec ) is a Canadian astronaut .
biography
Saint-Jacques studied technical physics at the École polytechnique de Montréal . In 1998, he received a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Cambridge, UK , after previously writing studies on the instruments of the COAST telescope and the Canarian William Herschel telescope . In addition, Saint-Jacques graduated from Laval University with a doctorate in medicine in 2005 and worked for several years as a family doctor at McGill University .
From 1999 to 2001, Saint-Jacques was involved in the development and operation of the Subaru telescope in Hawaii. He later became a member of the Astrophysical Group at the University of Montreal . Before joining the Canadian astronaut squad, Saint-Jacques worked as a doctor in a clinic in an Inuit settlement in the Canadian province of Québec . He has also taught as a lecturer in the medical school at McGill University.
Astronaut activity
On May 13, 2009, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) appointed Saint-Jacques as a member of the third Canadian space travel group in their astronaut squad. Until September 2011, Saint-Jacques completed his training as a mission specialist at the Johnson Space Center in Houston together with US astronauts . Since then he has been working in the robotics department at JSC, which also includes training at the European Robotic Arm .
From 20. to 26. In October 2011 he was part of NASA's NEEMO-15 submarine mission together with Aquanauts Commanders Shannon Walker ( NASA ), Takuya Ōnishi ( JAXA ) and Steve Squyres (Cornell University, University of North Carolina, Wilmington) .
On May 16, 2016, Saint-Jacques was nominated for a six-month stay on board the ISS. He flew to the ISS on December 3, 2018 with the Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft and worked there as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 58 and 59 . He returned on June 24, 2019. Previously he was a substitute for the German Alexander Gerst on the Soyuz MS-09 flight .
Private
Saint-Jacques grew up in Saint-Lambert, a suburb of Montreal , and is fluent in English and French. His hobbies include cycling, climbing and sailing.
