Steve Squyres

Steven W. Squyres (born January 9, 1956 ) is Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at Cornell University in Ithaca , New York State (USA). His field of research is planetary research, with a focus on the large solids in the solar system , such as terrestrial planets and the moons of gas giants. Squyres is the Principal Investigator for the Mars Exploration Rover Mission (MER). He is the brother of Tim Squyres and a former student of the late Carl Sagan .

education

After high school, he received a BA in geology in 1978 and a PhD in philosophy from Cornell University in 1982 . He spent five years as a researcher at NASA Ames Research Center before returning to Cornell University in 1987. In 1987 he received the Harold C. Urey Prize from the American Astronomical Society . In 2007 he received the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Earth and Environmental Sciences from the Franklin Institute.

Squyres has been involved in many NASA planetary missions, including Voyager 1 and 2 , Magellan, and the NEAR Shoemaker . In addition to his work on the MER mission, he is co-investigator of the Mars Express and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter missions . He is a member of the Mars Odyssey team and the Cassini-Huygens mission. Squyres chairs the NASA Space Science Advisory Committee and is a member of the NASA Advisory Council.

From 20. to 26. In October 2011 he was part of NASA's NEEMO-15 submarine mission together with the aquanauts Shannon Walker (commander), Takuya Ōnishi (JAXA) and David Saint-Jacques (CSA) .

ABC News named Squyres "Person of the Week" on January 9, 2004, after the Spirit spacecraft successfully landed on Mars. In 2005 he received the Wired Rave Award for Science from Wired Magazine for the construction of Spirit and Opportunity, which had already survived thirteen times their planned lifespan.

Steven Squyres wrote the book Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity, and the Exploration of the Red Planet about the MER mission, which served as a template for Disney's IMAX production Roving Mars .
