David Thorne

David Thorne (* 1960 in Boston ) is an American artist who makes use of conceptual and video art . He worked for a long time with Julia Meltzer as the group Speculative Archives . His work was shown at the documenta exhibition.

Life

David Thorne graduated from UCLA in 2004 with an MFA . In the same year he became a Media Arts Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation . In 2006 he was artist in residence at the Cooper Union in New York. Under the name The Speculative Archive , he works with Julia Meltzer on installations , photographs and videos that often have a political context.

In a group exhibition on the subject of disinformation at Apexart in New York in 2005, Thornes and Meltzer showed a series of digital photos of people who were arrested on suspicion of terrorism for photographing public places. From 2006 to 2007 Meltzer and Thorne lived in Damascus , where they processed their life situation in two video installations. In February 2008 Thorne and Meltzer received first prize at transmediale.08 for the work Not a Matter of If but When (2006), which was created during her time in Syria and the conditions there after Syria withdrew from Lebanon as a result of the Cedar Revolution reflected. In 2008 he was nominated for the Nam June Paik Award together with Julia Meltzer .

Thorne lives and works in Los Angeles .
