David Joel Williams (born February 26, 1988 in Brisbane ) is an Australian football player .

Club career

Williams, who belongs to the Aboriginal population , played football as well as rugby union in his youth and was offered a scholarship from the Queensland Reds as a teenager . In youth football, Williams played for Mitchelton FC and attended the Queensland Academy of Sport before signing a professional contract for the final games of the season with Queensland Roar in early 2006 in the A-League and making his professional debut in the home game against Sydney FC .

After trial training at Liverpool FC , RSC Anderlecht , Bruges Club and Brøndby IF , he finally signed a three-year contract with the Danish club Brøndby. He first played in the youth and reserve team, but moved up to the professional squad after twelve goals in five games and made his debut in the Superligaen on August 5 against AC Horsens . From January 2007 he was officially part of the professional squad and subsequently came mainly as a substitute for short appearances, including the 2006/07 Royal League victory against FC Copenhagen .

In September 2008 Williams fell out for several months due to a knee injury and was no longer considered after his recovery at the turn of the year under the new coach Kent Nielsen . Williams then publicly demanded more time again in the summer of 2009, otherwise he would leave the club. The club's officials reacted to this statement by first sending the striker to the South African partner club Bidvest Wits for a trial session and then lending him back to Australia to the newly formed A-League team North Queensland Fury for the 2009/10 season . In late December 2009 it was announced that Williams had been signed by Fury for the next two seasons. For the upcoming group stage of the AFC Champions League 2011 , which takes place during the Australian season break, he was signed by league rivals Sydney FC on loan.

National team

Williams first took part in the Oceania qualification of the U-20s in January 2005 and scored eight goals in the U-17 qualifying tournament in April 2005, including the 1-0 winner in the decisive final against Vanuatu. As a result, he was nominated for both the 2005 U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands and the 2005 U-17 World Cup in Peru.

After he was part of the squad in the preliminary round of the World Cup from the Australian U-20s but was not used, FIFA determined that he was no longer eligible to compete in the U-17 World Cup due to the regulations. In 2006 he was part of the Australian squad at the U-19 Asian Cup , but missed qualifying for the U-20 World Cup in 2007 due to a 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals against South Korea .

After several appearances for the Australian U-23 selection in qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games , Williams made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against China in the Australian senior team in June 2008 . In the 1-0 defeat, he came on for James Holland after 63 minutes .
