biography

Davide Simoncelli competed in an Alpine World Cup race for the first time in the 2000/01 season , but it wasn't until a year later that he was able to classify himself in the top 30 and collect some World Cup points. He made his breakthrough in the 2003/04 season when, thanks to regular good performances, he finished fifth in the giant slalom World Cup. At his world championship premiere in St. Anton in 2001 , Simoncelli finished 20th in giant slalom and 23rd in slalom. In 2003 and 2005 he only started in the giant slalom, but retired both times.

On December 21, 2003, Simoncelli won his first World Cup race, the giant slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia , a week after finishing second on the same route. A year earlier he had finished second in Alta Badia. This was followed by a phase with somewhat weaker performances, but in December 2005 he again finished second in a giant slalom race - again on his favorite track in Alta Badia. In March 2006 he then achieved his second World Cup victory, with which he achieved fourth place in the Giant Slalom World Cup in the 2005/06 season . At the 2006 Winter Olympics , however, he was eliminated in the first giant slalom run.

His results deteriorated again over the next three years. He had to end the 2006/07 season in January due to an injury, he rarely made it into the top 10 in world cup races, in the giant slalom world cup he was no longer in the top ten and in the season 2008/09 he was no longer in the top 20 to find. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , he finished eleventh in the giant slalom. In winter 2009/10 Simoncelli was able to improve significantly again. He achieved two second places in Alta Badia and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and, like four years earlier, was fourth in the Giant Slalom World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he did not come close to his good World Cup season results and was only 19th in the giant slalom.

In the 2010/11 season , seventh place in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère was his best World Cup result. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Simoncelli finished 20th. At the end of the season, he suffered injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus in his left knee at the Italian championships . In the next World Cup winter 2011/12 Simoncelli was able to improve on the previous year. His best race result was fifth in Kranjska Gora and tenth in the Giant Slalom World Cup . On June 24, 2012, Simoncelli suffered a serious stomach injury while training on the glacier , after which he had to interrupt summer training for around three months.

In December 2012, Simoncelli came third in the giant slalom at Beaver Creek and won the third edition of the Alpine Rockfest in Andalo . In his last two seasons Simoncelli was able to classify himself consistently in midfield. He was briefly in the limelight again when he was third in the giant slalom at the 2014 Winter Olympics , but a faulty second run only brought him 17th overall. After finishing second in the 2015 Italian giant slalom championships, the Trentino announced his retirement from skiing.

Simoncelli is in a relationship with the ski racer Irene Curtoni .
