The choice of the venue was made on May 25, 2006 in Vilamoura ( Portugal ) at the 45th FIS Congress by the 15 members of the FIS Executive Committee. The market in Werdenfelser Land prevailed with 9: 6 votes against the only competitor Schladming .

Garmisch-Partenkirchen had already tried to apply five times since the 1978 World Cup , the last time being in 2004 for the 2009 World Cup. Schladming had already hosted the 1982 World Cup and narrowly failed to award the 2009 World Cup to Val-d'Isère , but was finally able to stand up prevail two years later and hosted the 2013 World Cup .

Appointment and disciplines

At the FIS Congress in Cape Town on May 27, 2008, the international ski association confirmed the date for the Alpine World Ski Championships, according to which the title fights would take place from February 7 to 20, 2011. The competition program with the exact start times for the 13 days of the World Cup was decided and determined by the FIS board around a year before the major event.

In the alpine championships, five races and a team competition were held for each gender . The individual medals were awarded in the downhill , super-G , super-combined , giant slalom and slalom disciplines . The women's and men's slalom races took place on the Gudiberg with the finish line at the Olympic ski stadium on the Olympic hill in Partenkirchen. All other disciplines were held on the Kandahar slope with the finish line in the Garmisch district.

Attendees

525 athletes (208 women and 317 men) from 67 countries competed for a total of 33 medals .

organization

Event GmbH

For the organization and implementation of the 2011 World Cup, an event company was founded on January 5, 2007 and entered in the commercial register. The GmbH was under the umbrella of the German Ski Association and was a hundred percent subsidiary of it. All groups involved, the DSV, the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Garmisch Ski Club were represented on the executive committee of the WM-Veranstaltungs-GmbH. The organizing committee was divided into a strategic and an operational level.

Organizing Committee

The strategic level of the Organizing Committee consisted of the Presidium, Honorary Presidium, OC Advisory Board and Coordination Committee. The Presidium was led by DSV President Alfons Hörmann, the Deputy President was the Mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Thomas Schmid. The honorary presidium consisted of well-earned capacities from politics and sport. Rosi Mittermaier , Minister of State Erwin Huber , Fritz Wagnerberger and District Administrator Harald Kühn supported the organizing committee in social and political issues. The OC advisory board had an advisory role. It consisted of experts for finance (Helmut Schreyer, Manfred Baldauf), legal affairs (Franz Steinle, Gerhard Dambeck) and for the organization of major sporting events (Michael Maurer, OK Vier-Schanzentournee). Another component of the strategic level was the coordination committee. It included members of the International Ski Association (Sarah Lewis, Christian Knauth), the European Broadcasting Union (Marc Jörg, Ingolfur Hannesson), the marketing agency and the national host broadcaster (ZDF / ARD). This committee met at regular intervals to discuss the development of the World Cup project and to coordinate the joint approach.

The operational level was led by the management in the person of Peter Fischer and Walter Vogel. The two managing directors managed and coordinated the goals, tasks and responsibilities of the individual departments. The organizational areas were divided into seven departments.

  • Logistics: logistics, transport, events, opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Tourism / accommodation
  • Sports projects: accreditation, volunteerism, youth camp.
  • Marketing: media, communication, sponsoring.
  • Race organization / track construction: race management, track staff, buildings, mountain railways, technology, slopes.
  • Administration: administration, ticket sales.
  • Environment / traffic

Culture

The official logo of the Alpine Ski World Cup was designed by graphic designer Peter Ostenrieder and presented to the public for the first time as part of the Ski World Cup 2007 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It shows a stylized skier reminiscent of the curve lines of a slalom run in the German national colors as well as five wavy lines in the Olympic colors, which are supposed to symbolize the five participating continents.

Ga and Pa in the Medal Plaza

The official mascots of the 2011 Alpine World Ski Championships were the two snowballs "Ga" and "Pa". The figures were designed by the central World Cup ambassador and member of the Honorary Presidium of the Organizing Committee Rosi Mittermaier with the help of her husband Christian Neureuther and her daughter Ameli Neureuther . Ga and Pa were first presented on February 26, 2010 at Garmischer Mohrenplatz.

Christian Neureuther initially had the idea of a snowball that would roll through Germany and spread a good atmosphere. Based on the two local ski clubs, it was finally decided to stage the snowballs as a duo. The mascots' caps wore the colors of the Garmisch Ski Club ("Ga", red cap) and the Partenkirchen Ski Club ("Pa", blue cap). Ga and Pa appeared as lovers and were intended to symbolize a harmonious relationship between the two sports clubs and the two districts, which in the past had been characterized by a certain rivalry.

In the run-up to the World Cup, Ga and Pa appeared as advertising media and ambassadors on various occasions and could be seen at all competitions and at the award ceremonies during the event.

The motto of the world championship was "Festival in the Snow" and was announced for the first time on October 16, 2009 by the organizing committee.

The official World Cup song was entitled "You're a hero (between heaven and hell)". It was interpreted by the racer and later double world champion Elisabeth Görgl and the composer and producer Christian Geisler under the name "Lizz & Crizz" and performed live at the opening ceremony on February 7, 2011. In this song you can also hear some moderation sequences by the sports commentator and media director of the organizing committee Gerd Rubenbauer . The title alludes in an ambiguous way to the two sections of the slopes “Heaven” and “Hell”, which are part of the Kandahar race course.

Award ceremony for the women's slalom

On the evening before the first day of the competition, the opening ceremony took place in the ski stadium on the Great Olympic Hill, at which, among others, Chancellor Angela Merkel , Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer , Munich Mayor Christian Ude and IOC Vice President Thomas Bach were present. It was the first opening ceremony of an Alpine Ski World Cup that was broadcast live on German television.

After a race, a flower ceremony always took place in the finish area of the race tracks . The medals were awarded on each day of the competition at 6:30 p.m. on the so-called Medal Plaza in the Michael-Ende-Kurpark in the Garmisch district, only on the final Sunday it took place directly after the competition in the Gudiberg-Arena. Following the award ceremony, the draw for the start numbers for the following race was also carried out at the Medal Plaza.

Stages

Kandahar Arena finish area
Gudiberg in the women's slalom

Due to security requirements, the audience capacity at both stadiums had to be reduced. After the planning originally provided for a capacity of 15,000 spectators each, a reduction to 10,000 spectators per competition was made in view of the consequences after the accident at the Loveparade 2010 . The organizing committee expected a loss of around one million euros due to these restrictions.

Access was blocked for individual traffic. Both ski stadiums could only be reached via shuttle buses, the Kandahar Arena also via the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn .

Kandahar Arena

The Kandahar Arena, in the form of a temporary tubular steel grandstand , offered space for 10,000 spectators, while a catering and tent area and a show stage were located in the so-called fan park behind the grandstand area. The so-called “free fall” on the men's course and the associated jumps were visible to the audience.

Gudiberg Arena

In contrast to previous World Cup races, the finish on the slope on the Gudiberg did not lead to the neighboring Olympic ski stadium, but to a tubular steel temporary stadium with a capacity of 10,000 spectators in the area of the finish area and along the route. Another 5,000 spectators found space in the neighboring fan park, which was located inside the Olympic ski stadium. From there, a large part of the route could be seen, but not the finish line, so a video screen was installed at the height of the landing track of the Great Olympic Hill. The catering and a show stage were also located within the fan park. With the exception of the start, almost the entire racetrack was visible from the seats and standing areas in the grandstand area.

The team competition was held in the form of a parallel giant slalom. The best 16 nations in the World Cup were allowed to start. In fact, eleven competed, so five seeded teams had a bye in the round of 16. In each round, two women and two men from one team competed against each other in four runs, the winning team received one point per run; with the same running time, both teams got one point (entered in the round of 16 in the duel between Croatia and Canada). With a final score of 2: 2, the sum of the running times of the fastest woman and the fastest man per team decided.

Benjamin Raich was seriously injured in the duel against Croatian Natko Zrnčić-Dim without falling, so that he could no longer compete in the remaining races of the World Cup (giant slalom and slalom).

France's final victory depended on a hundredth of a second, by which Anémone Marmottan was faster than Michaela Kirchgasser: if these two runners had the same time, the final would have ended 3-2 for Austria, but it was 2-2 and the better individual times had to be determined in France was ahead of this calculation by 0.18 seconds.

Balance sheet

Even before the final competition, the President of the World Ski Federation FIS, Gian-Franco Kasper, was very satisfied with the way the world championship was organized. In addition to the organization, Kasper also expressly praised the large number of people who attended almost all the competitions. The feared traffic chaos did not materialize either, to which the arrival and departure by train included in the ticket price as well as the extensive shuttle service with sometimes over 50 buses made a significant contribution.

In total, the competitions were followed by around 130,000 visitors, so ten percent more spectators came than expected. The organizing committee announced that it would definitely end on a positive note. Nevertheless, in the competitions that took place during the week, many seats in the stands and in the finish area remained empty, such as in the women's Super-G or in the team competition, which was partly explained by the ticket prices being too high.

The challenge in terms of slope preparation was the temperatures, which were above freezing point, sometimes in the double-digit range, during almost the entire World Cup. However, both racetracks were located on north-facing slopes, the temperatures always fell below 0 ° C at night and the snow cover on the slopes was up to 70 centimeters high. As a result, the slopes were icy, but overall they were classified as in good condition. In addition, there were no restrictions due to weather conditions, only the women's giant slalom had to be postponed by two hours due to fog.
