Marc Gini (born November 8, 1984 in Castasegna ) is a former Swiss ski racer . Sandra Gini's brother specialized in slalom and giant slalom races and won a world cup race .
biography
Gini's career began in 2000 with involvement in various FIS races and national championships. The first successes emerged in 2003 when it was also used in European Cup races. In 2004 he had to take a full season off because of a torn cruciate ligament . Gini achieved greater fame at national level in April 2005 when he won the Swiss slalom championship. He had already taken part in World Cup races since January 2003 , but was only able to win his first World Cup points on December 4, 2005 , finishing 22nd in the slalom in Beaver Creek .
Gini took part in the slalom world championships in 2005 , 2007 and 2009 , but was eliminated every time. In 2006 he became Swiss champion in slalom for the second time and in giant slalom for the first time; Two further Swiss championship titles in slalom and one in super combined followed in the next three years.
On November 11, 2007, Gini with the start number 19 surprisingly won the slalom on the Reiteralm ahead of Kalle Palander and Manfred Mölgg , after he had already led after the first run, and thus won the only World Cup victory of his career. Five weeks later he achieved his second-best World Cup result with seventh place in the slalom in Alta Badia . As a result, Gini could not classify himself in the top ten for a long time and was relegated to the Swiss-Ski B squad after the 2008/09 season due to insufficient performance (14th place as the best result) .
In the 2009/10 season , Gini showed an increasing performance curve: on November 15, 2009, he finished tenth in the Levi slalom for the first time in almost two years, and on December 3, he celebrated his first European Cup victory. On January 10, 2010, he achieved sixth place in the Adelboden slalom, the second-best World Cup result of his career at the time. These results also gave him a start at his first Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , where he finished 15th in slalom. He also rose from the Swiss B-squad for the 2010/11 season to the A-squad. In contrast to previous years, Gini had almost no losses in the 2010/11 World Cup season . His best result of the season was fourth place at the finals in Lenzerheide . At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he finished only 37th, but achieved a result for the first time in his fourth World Cup participation.
After the end of the 2010/11 season, Gini underwent meniscus surgery, which also treated a cartilage damage in the knee. Due to persistent pain, which had only allowed him to do very limited summer training, a second operation followed in early October 2011. In the 2011/12 season he could not take part in any race, in the following 2012/13 season a 17th place remained his best result. At the World Championships in Schladming he was 18th in the slalom. In 2013/14 he could not show a single countable result due to numerous failures and clearly missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Sochi .
After the winter of 2014/15 had been similarly unsuccessful, Gini showed an upward trend again in the 2015/16 season. He won two European Cup slaloms and took third place in the discipline classification. In the 2016/17 World Cup season he was able to classify himself three times in the points. On April 7, 2017, he announced his retirement as a top athlete.
