View of Åre

The 45th Alpine World Ski Championships took place in Åre ( Sweden ) from February 5th to 17th, 2019 .

The award took place at the FIS Congress on June 5, 2014 in Barcelona ( Spain ). The only other applicant was Cortina d'Ampezzo ( Italy ), who will host the event in 2021.

The World Ski Championships were characterized by constant freak weather and also started with an arrival chaos, in which many flights were canceled and equipment sometimes arrived days later. While temperatures were around −25 degrees Celsius at the beginning of the World Cup, in some cases this direction even rose above freezing point. Because the ski slopes were affected by the warm weather, on the women’s side only the full length slalom could be played, the men had to make do with a shortened descent and combination. The downhill and the women's Super G were each the shortest World Championship races of all time.

other remarks

  • The second round of both giant slaloms was held under floodlights. While this was the case with the women before, namely at the World Championships in the same location in 2007 (at that time even as a complete "night event"), this was the case for the men at World Championships (and also applicable to the ski competitions in the context of Olympic Winter Games) a novelty.
