Philip Davis Guggenheim (born March 11, 1963 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American director and film producer . Guggenheim won in 2007 the Oscar for best documentary ( An Inconvenient Truth ).

Life

Guggenheim was born in 1963 as the son of filmmaker Charles Guggenheim and his wife Marion. He graduated from Brown University in Providence . Guggenheim has directed several episodes of the TV series Party of Five , New York Cops - NYPD Blue and Deadwood , among others . As a producer, he was responsible for films such as Training Day and Gracie . Guggenheim also wrote the script for Gracie .

In 2007 Guggenheim received an Oscar for his documentary An Inconvenient Truth . The film, based on a slide show by former US Vice President Al Gore , deals with the issue of global warming . Davis Guggenheim produced a half-hour advertising film for Barack Obama's election campaign, which was broadcast in prime time on all major channels in October 2008, a week before the presidential election.

Guggenheim has been married to actress Elisabeth Shue since 1994 . The couple have a son and two daughters.
