The Dazai Osamu Prize ( Japanese 太宰 治 賞 , Dazai Osamu Shō ) is a literary prize for young Japanese writers , which is awarded annually by the city of Mitaka and the publisher Chikuma Shobō for extraordinary and not yet published short stories. The price was advertised for the first time in 1965 by Chikuma Shobō Verlag and was awarded on its own until the economic situation deteriorated in 1978. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Dazai Osamu's death in 1998, the award was revived and awarded from the following year with the support of the city of Mitaka until today. The award is endowed with prize money of 1 million yen.
