DeSagana N'gagne Diop or Gana Diop for short (born January 30, 1982 , Dakar ) is a former Senegalese basketball player who was active in the American professional league NBA . The 2.13 m tall, 127 kg heavy Diop played on the position of the center . Today Diop works as a trainer.
Career
Diop was selected in the 2001 NBA Draft in eighth position by the Cleveland Cavaliers . With the Cavaliers he played 193 games in four seasons, but was never able to live up to expectations due to frequent injuries and weight problems. In the summer of 2005 he signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks . There he was a positive surprise. He developed into a strong defensive specialist. His hard work and his skills as a rebounder and shot blocker made him a crowd favorite and increased his working hours. In 2006, Dallas coach Avery Johnson had Diop starting most of the games, preferring him to the more experienced Erick Dampier . In the playoffs, he was instrumental in the victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7. Despite a broken nose, he played an excellent defense against Spurs star Tim Duncan in the fourth quarter and overtime and scored two crucial offensive rebounds. In the 2005/06 NBA season , Diop scored an average of 2.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks with an average playing time of 18.6 minutes per game.
On February 19, 2008 he was sent to the New Jersey Nets by the Mavericks along with Devin Harris , Trenton Hassell , Maurice Ager , Keith Van Horn and two draft picks . In exchange, Jason Kidd , Malik Allen and Antoine Wright moved to Dallas. On July 9, 2008, after his contract expired, he was again signed up by Dallas and signed a 5-year contract. On January 16, 2009, Diop was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats . The Mavericks received Matt Carroll and Ryan Hollins in exchange . Diop played for the Bobcats until the summer of 2013. After his contract expired, Diop did not receive a new contract in Charlotte. He then signed a preliminary contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers , for whom he played from 2001 to 2005. The contract was terminated on October 25, shortly before the start of the season.
Coaching career
After his basketball career, Diop was hired by the Texas Legends from the D-League in November 2014 as a player development coach. In 2015, he was promoted to assistant coach. In October 2016, Diop got a job on the coaching staff of Utah Jazz .
