De novo
As de novo (Latin for anew ) is a process, a sequence or an action that is not assumed or preceded by a similar one.
In medicine, a disease is referred to as de novo if it occurs without a causative predecessor disease, for example the development of a secondary tumor without it being caused by a previous tumor disease, or a primary tumor without previous dysplastic cells. Mutations occurring for the first time in a genome are also referred to as de novo mutations.
In chemistry, one speaks of de novo synthesis when building complex molecules from simple precursors.
