Dead Set is a Live - double album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

Dead Set is Reckoning's brother album . Both live albums come from the same gigs to celebrate the band's fifteenth birthday. The Grateful Dead performed at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco from September 21 to October 14, 1980 and at Radio City Music Hall in New York City from October 22 to 31 . Some songs can only be heard in a shortened form on the album.

At first the recordings of the performances were to be used for a double album, but in order to maintain a good quality and a good format, the recordings were divided into two double albums. The other recordings of these appearances can be heard on the album Reckoning , which was released in April 1981. Reckoning contains the acoustic tracks and Dead Set the electric tracks.

In addition to the two albums, there is a documentary called Dead Ahead about the birthday appearances on October 30th and 31st, which was also broadcast live on television, in which the acoustic and electrical recordings can be heard mixed.

Jerry Garcia commented on this in an interview that they just had too much good material. The idea of an acoustic and an electric album was pathetic, especially since the electronic recordings were seldom shorter than eight minutes. That would mean that there would only be two songs per LP side, which was stupid.

Dead Set tries more than the previous live albums to simulate a typical Grateful Dead concert, whereby shortened solos and free improvisation phases also have their place. Since the album is a recording of various performances, there are no particular transitions and continuity of the music. Therefore free improvisation phases were removed in order to release the albums on a single record.

With Dan Healy, Jerry Garcia and Betty Cantor-Jackson members of the Grateful Dead Team appeared again as producers. Both Healy and Cantor-Jackson worked as sound engineers for the band.

In 2004 a revised version of the 15 songs and 10 others appeared on a bonus CD from Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) , which were then also released as a single CD in 2006. Here the free improvisation phases were again taken into account.

Six years passed before the release of the next album In the Dark , during which the band celebrated great success with live performances and especially Jerry Garcia noticed with excessive drug abuse.

successes

The album reached number 29 in the Billboard charts and is therefore more successful than the acoustic recordings of the performances.
