Landmark of the paradise garden: the "Eva"

Paradiesgarten is the name of a vineyard in the municipality of Deidesheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

Location, climate, soils

The Paradise Garden is a single site with an area of 30.2 hectares and part of the Forster Mariengarten site . The location extends southwest of Deidesheim between the outskirts and the Haardt . The transition from the Palatinate Forest to the Lower Palatinate Lowland , known as the Haardtrand, forms an approximately one to two kilometer wide foothills zone, where, due to Tertiary and Pleistocene deposits, light and fertile soils are predominant.

The Haardt mountain range protects the vineyards from excessive rainfall in its leeward position , and the slope of the slope means that cold air masses can flow off to the Rhine plain on frosty spring nights and the vines usually do not freeze. The slopes of the Paradise Garden are exposed to the south or south-east, which is reflected in relatively high levels of sunshine.

Surname

In contrast to the other individual vineyards in Deidesheim, whose site names were mostly created between the 13th and 15th centuries, but at the latest from the 19th century, the site name Paradiesgarten is quite young; it was first mentioned around 1955. When this vineyard was established and the name was given, marketing considerations also played a role.

The name Paradiesgarten was later the inspiration for the naming of the Deidesheim swimming pool Oase im Paradiesgarten , which is located in the vineyards of the Paradiesgarten, as well as for the name of the Deidesheim town hall Paradiesgarten and for the motto Deidesheim - the other paradise , chosen by Tourist Service GmbH as a slogan for the Deidesheim holiday region.

Celebrities Vineyard

View of the "celebrity vineyard"

The so-called "Prominent Vineyard" is located in the Paradise Garden. Prominent personalities who have made a name for themselves in politics and society, and some of whom have already been guests in Deidesheim, have the opportunity to lease an "honorary vine"; the fee for the lease goes to the Museum für Weinkultur . Among the vine tenants there are or were personalities such as the former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev , the ex-Prime Ministers of Great Britain Margaret Thatcher and John Major , former Chancellor Helmut Kohl , Bernhard Vogel , the former Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, and Stefan Steinweg , Olympic champion from Deidesheim; Richard von Weizsäcker became the first leaseholder in 1983 .

Once a year at the grape harvest time in October, all vine tenants are invited to read the grapes in the celebrity vineyard followed by Vespers. The Palatinate Wine Queen is also there . As in earlier times, the grapes are picked by hand and carried out of the rows with logs. The grapes picked will later be produced in the Winning winery , of which a bottle will be sent to each vine leaseholder next summer.

Sculpture Eva

It is the symbol of the paradise garden. In the 1950s, the church took offense at the revealing depiction and Eva was dressed in an iron robe made from vines. However, this did not withstand the effects of the weather and rusted, so that the sculpture has since reappeared in its original form for the viewer.
