Dennis Chambers (born May 9, 1959 ) is an American drummer who played and produced records with John Scofield , Steely Dan , Santana , Mike Stern , the Brecker Brothers , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Parliament / Funkadelic , John McLaughlin and many others. Although he never received formal training, Chambers became a world renowned jazz / fusion drummer and is known for his precise, powerful technique.

Chambers started playing drums at the age of four and began performing in nightclubs in the Baltimore area when he was six . According to his own statements, he practiced on pillows, which only "sound" when they hit a certain level, and on a drum set that was built upside down, which makes him particularly flexible. In 1978 he joined George Clinton's P-Funk band Parliament / Funkadelic and played with them until 1985. Since then he has played with almost all the greats of fusion music. The close cooperation with John McLaughlin , who described him in an interview as his "brother in arms" (brother in arms), is particularly worth mentioning .

Chambers' own group Niacin includes bassist Billy Sheehan .

In 2016, the Rolling Stone listed Chambers 63 of the 100 best drummers of all time .
