content

Summer in a sleepy New England town . The owner of a small bookstore, Helen MacFarquhar, finds a love letter in a crack in a sofa in her shop ; but without the name of the sender and recipient. Helen is fascinated by the words of the letter. She believes the letter is addressed to her since it was finally on the couch in her shop. The poetically written letter releases feelings in Helen and she falls in love with her young assistant, the 20-year-old student Johnny, because she thinks the letter is from him. Johnny, on the other hand, who secretly reads the letter in Helen's house a short time later, thinks that the letter was addressed to him by Helen. The two then begin an intimate love affair. At the same time, Helen is also swarmed by George Matthias, the local firefighter. George has been in love with Helen for years and shows her his feelings openly. However, Helen is unsure of her feelings and continues to meet with Johnny.

After a few weeks, Helen's mother and grandmother signed up for a visit. At the same time, more and more people are finding the love letter in the village, which also releases long-lost feelings among the readers (for example with the local police superintendent or with Janet, Helen's employee). While Helen's mother and grandmother have arrived in town, Lillian (Helen's mother) reveals to her daughter that she is a lesbian and will henceforth live with Miss Scattergoods. Helen accepts her mother's decision and is happy about her openness. A short time later, Helen meets with Johnny to discuss their relationship. Here it becomes clear that the letter is neither from Helen nor from Johnny. Helen is then unsure of her feelings and does not know how to continue her relationship with Johnny.

George and Helen meet again at a garden party. George tells Helen that he will be moving to New York. She then asks George where to contact him. He explains to her that he will send her a postcard. At the same time, Lillian and Miss Scattergoods are sitting in a bedroom talking. Miss Scattergoods reads a few lines from the love letter found by Helen, whereupon she tells Lillian that the letter came from her and that she wrote it for her many years ago to show her intense love.

It remains to be seen which man Helen will choose.

criticism

"The undisguised old-fashioned idea of the film only finds its way into a playful elegance in the loving and detailed staging, whose generational joie de vivre is downright contagious."

“Unfortunately, the whole story is so good that in the long run it is more boring than entertaining. In addition, apart from Miss Spielberg and Tom Selleck as a friendly firefighter, she doesn't exactly have the most attractive acting crew to offer. Director Peter Chan gives away a lot of good and funny approaches. "
