action

Ann Hamilton is the daughter of a chemistry professor. When the factory owner Alan Garroway meets her, he immediately falls in love with her. He asks for her hand and they quickly get married. On a trip to Washington , Ann Alan's manager meets Mr. Warmsley and numerous other friends. Ann does not feel comfortable in this new environment. She feels badly dressed and feels that her own behavior in higher society is too bad. Slowly she also learns more about the history of Alan's company. When his father died, he took over the company together with his brother Michael. However, since Michael was accused of embezzlement, Alan has never seen him again. A horse incident occurs on the Garroway family estate in Virginia . The horse suddenly went wild and she found out from a stable boy that Alan had once treated this horse brutally. When Ann is suddenly treated rude by Alan, Ann suspects that something is wrong with her husband. She believes that his behavior has to do with cheating on her brother and wants to help her husband overcome these mental health problems.

When Alan leaves for a business trip to Seattle , Ann visits the company and has Mr. Warmsley give her Michael’s address. She is meeting Michael at his ranch when Alan suddenly appears there too. Alan becomes jealous and accuses Ann of cheating. She explains that she just wanted to find out more about his past to help him. Alan returns to Seattle, while Ann returns to Virginia. When Alan also returns to Virginia, Michael accuses him of murdering an engineer at the company they share. Michael tells Alan that he actually wanted to keep this matter quiet so as not to endanger the company. However, when he got to know Ann, he found her too sympathetic and sincere to live with a murderer. When Alan explains to him that he has changed in the meantime and that Ann wants to tell Ann in detail about his past, Michael decides to keep the murder secret.

However, Alan fears that Ann would leave him after his confession and remains silent. He is now trying to prevent his wife from contacting his brother Michael. However, Ann would like to meet Michael again to find out his version of the brother story. Alan forbids her to do this and Ann is now afraid of her husband. She tries to escape from the house in Virginia, but Alan prevents it. Alan now knows that the only way to keep his act a secret is to kill Ann. While riding out with Ann, he provokes an accident. When he wants to kill Ann, who is lying on the ground, with a stone, his horse knocks out and kills him. Ann returns to her father's house. Michael finds her there and explains his feelings for her.

Reviews

“An effective psychological drama, which, however, oscillates too indecisively between social film and detective film; prominently miscast in almost all roles. "

"The psychological drama, which finally reaches over into the criminalistic, remains unclear in the motives and pale in the representation."

“For me one of the best psychological thrillers of all time. Minelli's direction, Freund's pictures and the consistently wonderful cast - the film is looking for its equals in this genre and can only find it with Hitchcock. "
