The Detroit News is one of two major newspapers in the US city of Detroit , Michigan .

history

The first edition appeared in 1873. During this time, rooms had to be rented in the building that belonged to the rival Detroit Free Press. In its history, the Detroit News bought several newspapers. On February 1, 1919, the Detroit Tribune was taken over, followed by the Detroit Journal on July 21, 1922, and on November 7, 1960, the Detroit Times, which was in decline, bought and discontinued the publication. However, until 1967, the Detroit News used the Detroit Times building to print their newspaper. That year a new facility opened in Sterling Heights and the old building was demolished. The square that the old building was in was known as Times Square until 2009 . In 2009 it had to give way to the Rosa Parks Transit Center .

In 1985, The Evening News Associacation, the owners of the Detroit News, teamed up with Gannett .

The Detroit News claims to be the first newspaper to have its own radio station, called 8MK. It went on the air on August 20, 1920 and is now part of WWJ, which in turn is owned by CBS . In 1947 it opened Michigan's first television station, called WWJ-TV, which is now called WDIV-TV.

In 1989 the Detroit News entered into a 100-year joint operating agreement with the rival Free Press, which regulates the cooperation between the two newspapers. In this way, business processes have been merged while the employees and the orientation remain independent of one another. The resulting joint company is called Detroit Newspaper Partnership . The Free Press moved to the Detroit News building in 1998 and a joint weekend edition was published by May 7, 2006. Nowadays, the Detroit News, which has won three Pulitzer Awards , appears Monday through Saturday and has editorial responsibility for a page in the Sunday Free Press.
