In the 27th German championship season 1933/34, the synchronization in German football by the National Socialists , which had already started in the final phase of the preseason , continued. The seven existing traditional regional associations were dissolved. It was replaced by the Reichsführerring für physical exercises, which was converted into the German Reichsbund for physical exercises in January 1934 . The DRL comprised 15 specialist offices, number 2 of which was responsible for German football. The German Football Association was not dissolved, but had practically no function. There was not much resistance from the DFB officials.
The staging of the German championship has been radically redesigned. With the dissolution of the regional associations, no more regional championships were held. It was replaced for the first time by a nationwide uniform league, the Gauliga . In terms of football, Germany was divided into 16 sports districts, in which, as a rule, a ten-team one-tier league was set up. Exceptions were initially the districts of East Prussia and Pomerania , in which two seasons still played. This represented an enormous process of concentration in German football, because in the preseason there were over 50, often multi-tier, top divisions, 22 in the Central Region alone.
The mode of the German championship finals has also been changed. 16 teams were qualified as before, the champions of the respective Gauligen, but they said goodbye to the pure knockout system . The 16 teams initially played in four preliminary round groups with a return leg. The four group winners reached the semi-finals and then played the German champions in the knockout system. There were no return games, but a one-time encounter between the opponents in a neutral location.
This year, too, the title went to West Germany again. A year after the runner-up, FC Schalke 04 won their first German championship title. In the final, they defeated the old champions, 1. FC Nürnberg , 2-1. For the Nuremberg it was already the seventh final participation.
