The German Society for Photography e. V. ( DGPh ) was founded in Cologne in 1951. She advocates the interests of photography and related visual media in cultural contexts. The company's activities are geared towards the diverse areas of application of photography in art, science, education, journalism, business and politics. In addition to acting in these individual areas, the DGPh makes their interfaces and interactions visible.

The approximately 1000 appointed members of the ideal organization come from all areas of photography and are renowned personalities from the German and international photo scene.

Prices

  • The Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography honors living personalities for significant achievements in the field of photography. The merits of the award winner can be in the artistic, humanitarian, charitable, social, technical, educational or scientific field. The winners include August Sander (1961), Henri Cartier-Bresson (1967), Harold Edgerton (1981), Bernd and Hilla Becher (1985), Evelyn Richter (1992), Mogens S. Koch (2003), the founders of Rencontres d'Arles (2013, Maryse Cordesse, Lucien Clergue, Jean-Maurice Rouquette, Michel Tournier) and Trevor Paglen (2015).
  • The Dr. Erich Salomon Prize honors the exemplary application of photography in journalism. The winners included the magazine “ Stern ” (1971), Lotte Jacobi and Dr. Tim Gidal (1983), Mary Ellen Mark (1994), Arno Fischer (2000), Letizia Battaglia (2007), Peter Bialobrzeski (2012) and Antanas Sutkus (2017).
  • The Otto Steinert Prize is a sponsorship award for talented young photographers.
  • The DGPh Education Prize honors innovative scientific and practice-related theses as well as artistic projects in the field of teaching and with photography.
  • The DGPh research award for the history of photography is awarded as a grant.
  • The DGPh Prize for Scientific Photography honors photographic works or videos that document a scientific topic (also from medicine) or that deal artistically with a scientific topic.
  • The DGPh Prize of the Science and Technology Section serves to recognize and promote younger scientists and to stimulate the scientific processing of photographic problems.
  • The German Camera Prize is an award jointly donated by Westdeutscher Rundfunk and the City of Cologne, which has been used to honor outstanding achievements in the field of camera work for film and television since 1982. This award has not been supported by the DGPh since 1992.
