The German Pigeon Museum in the Kettelersiedlung district of Nuremberg was opened in 1992 and shows a rich collection of objects related to the pigeon . It is the only one of its kind in the world.
history
The pigeon museum, which emerged from a long-term private collection of the museum director Karlheinz Sollfrank, was opened in 1992 and initially comprised a space of around 150 square meters. At the beginning it was a pure collection of specialist literature that only dealt with the pedigree pigeons. Later the spectrum was expanded to include pedigree poultry and carrier pigeons. As early as 1993, the premises were expanded by 250 square meters and in 1995 by another 200 square meters to around 600 square meters. The exhibition rooms are now around 700 square meters in size. Another enlargement is planned.
exhibition
Around two thirds of the more than 40,000 exhibits from the international collection can be seen in the exhibition. Some of these date from the 16th century and include specialist literature on pedigree pigeons , carrier pigeons and pedigree poultry as well as postcards, stamps, certificates, medals, posters, prints, porcelain figurines, as well as watercolors and paintings relating to pigeons and other types of poultry.
Others
The pigeon museum publishes an in-house magazine called Columba every year for the international pigeon fancier meeting . It contains specialist articles by various writers.
