Richard Wayne "Dick" Van Dyke (born December 13, 1925 in West Plains , Missouri ) is an American television and film actor , entertainer and comedian . He became world-famous for his leading roles as Bert chimney sweep in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins (1964) and as Caractacus Potts in Tschitti Tschitti Bang Bang (1968). With The Dick Van Dyke Show , he had his own television show at times in the 1960s. In the 1990s, he made a comeback with the series Diagnose: Mord (Diagnosis Murder) .

Life

Career

Dick Van Dyke played his first leading role on the theater stage in 1960 in the play Bye Bye Birdie , for which he won a Tony Award . He then excelled in his own sitcom , the Dick Van Dyke Show , which ran in five seasons. Van Dyke won three Emmy Awards in the lead role of Rob Petrie . After that, he slowly switched from television to film. In 1963 his star role in Bye Bye Birdie was filmed with him, in 1964 he was seen in Always with Another (What a Way to Go!) . In the same year he stood in front of the camera in a double role in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins , as the life artist Bert and, heavily disguised, as the older owner of the bank. Van Dyke's attempt to mimic a Cockney accent has often been ridiculed (especially in the UK ). In this film, however, he showed his versatility as a singer and dancer. For his contribution to the soundtrack of Mary Poppins Van Dyke received a Grammy Award .

From the mid-1960s, Van Dyke starred in a series of relatively unsuccessful movies, of which only the children's film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) is still known, especially by the same musical . 1974 Van Dyke surprised in his first dramatic role as an alcoholic businessman in The Morning After (The Morning After) . Van Dyke received universal recognition for his performance and an Emmy nomination. In the 1998 sitcom Becker , Van Dyke played Becker senior (season 1, episode 13), the father of the main character Dr. John Becker ( Ted Danson ).

In 2006 Van Dyke played the role of a veteran night watchman in the hit movie Night at the Museum, alongside Ben Stiller and Robin Williams , among others . He kept this role in the two successors Night in Museum 2 and Night in the Museum: The Mysterious Tomb .

After Dick Van Dyke had played both chimney sweep Bert and Mr. Dawes senior in Mary Poppins in 1964 , he is also the only one of the old cast to be part of the sequel Mary Poppins' return in 2018 . There he plays Mr. Dawes junior this time.

Dick Van Dyke is the brother of actor Jerry Van Dyke . His son Barry Van Dyke and grandsons Carey and Shane starred alongside Van Dyke in Diagnosis: Murder . His daughter Stacy Van Dyke is also an actress.

Dick Van Dyke is a great admirer of Stan Laurel and gave an eulogy at his funeral. At a meeting with Laurel he is said to have told him that he had copied a lot of him; Laurel is said to have replied with a smile: "I noticed."

One of Van Dyke's passions is producing 3D computer graphics . A practically impossible motorcycle stunt was carried out by him for Diagnosis: Murder .

When Dick Van Dyke was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993, the star's name was incorrectly given as DICK VANDYKE . Van Dyke personally drew a line between VAN and DYKE with a pen . The mistake was corrected after the ceremony.
