Supporting actors: Various guests from the field of cabaret

The establishment is a political cabaret show that has been broadcast by the German TV station ZDF since February 4, 2014. It is considered the successor to Neues aus der Anstalt , which was shown for the last time on October 1, 2013. Cabaret artists Max Uthoff and Claus von Wagner lead through the show . Well-known guests from the field of cabaret join them . Director of the program is Frank Hof .

Time slot, set and authors

The station is broadcast eight times a year (usually once a month from February to May and from September to December) on a Tuesday evening after the heute-journal live on ZDF. The program will be repeated on a Sunday on the DA-CH community broadcaster 3sat .

The program was broadcast from the ARRI studios in Munich until the end of 2017 . The studio represented the foyer of a psychiatric clinic . Uthoff and von Wagner initially represented the occupants of the clinic , which Urban Priol and Frank-Markus Barwasser (alias Erwin Pelzig ) had abandoned. Since 2018, the Bavaria -Studios ( Munich , Germany) have been in a new studio setting ) sent.

Each program has a theme, which is mostly also addressed in the solo performances of the guests. The theme song has also been changed to match the theme, for example Samba de Janeiro in the broadcast on the World Cup . In the broadcast after the terrorist attacks in Paris , the first "A" of "Anstalt" was represented in the logo by the Eiffel Tower .

The three-member team of authors of the institute belongs beside Uthoff and Wagner, journalist and cabaret editor Dietrich Krauss at who is also the author of the team today-show counts.

The company is the only German cabaret show to publish a fact check for every issue on its website , a mostly extensive list of literature, with the claim to be able to substantiate all statements in the show with openly communicated sources.

The 40th and 45th edition took place without Claus von Wagner, Frank-Markus Barwasser appeared as his “holiday replacement” (statement on the broadcast website). In the 49th edition, Max Uthoff was again represented by Till Reiners .

Recurring elements

As a kind of running gag , the group liked to give itself a new proper name in some episodes, started to proclaim the abbreviation, but always refrained from pronouncing it because the abbreviation was always associated with something negative from their point of view (e.g. AfD or Napalm ). Max Uthoff was also repeatedly interrupted in his solo, which he then complained about.

Furthermore, a rollable whiteboard appears in most editions of the institute , on which a diagram of personal or political entanglements is developed. The first diagram of this kind was presented by Erwin Pelzig in the November 13, 2012 issue of the previous program Neues aus der Anstalt . This chart examined the personal links between Goldman Sachs and high government finance positions around the world. A second diagram was shown by Pelzig in the June 25, 2013 issue on the subject of Gustl Mollath ; However, it has only been operated regularly since the debut of Die Anstalt von Uthoff and von Wagner under the name Tafelnummer . There is also a kind of role play in every issue, in which political, economic or social processes are illustrated. These role-playing games are often combined with the charts on the whiteboard.

In more recent episodes, Uthoff and von Wagner portray various real personalities recurring and parodying for individual segments through to entire episodes, such as Angela Merkel , Steffen Seibert and Andreas Scheuer (all from Wagner) and Horst Seehofer , Friedrich Merz and Isaac Newton (Uthoff ).

All in all, Uthoff and von Wagner did not come close to the rate of news from the institution in 2015 either , only slight increases can be observed among young audiences. Reviews

The ratings of the programs vary.

In the Süddeutsche Zeitung Uthoff and von Wagner, Irene Helmes attested to the opening broadcast and the follow-up broadcast of news from the institution that they would distribute “with obvious joy”. They could “not yet meet” the “self-formulated claim”, “a lot of jokes [...] were all too well known” and, in particular, the speed was too fast. On Spiegel Online , Stefan Kuzmany highlighted the “sharpness of the content” of the second episode and described the new format “with the right mix of good gags and nasty facts” as “brilliantly successful”.

Stefan Winterbauer praised the fifth episode on Meedia as “a real retrospective of classic cabaret” and “intellectual, sharp-tongued, courageous”.

For Stern , the seventh episode, with its haunting portrayal of the refugee drama, “shows that satire doesn't always have to be funny to be effective”.

In the Frankfurter Rundschau , Katja Thorwarth described the eighth episode, in which the Poroshenko government in Ukraine was sharply criticized with reference to Russia Today , as "a series of generalities at primary school level garnished with a reduced good-evil scheme à la cross front " the "simplest facts are broken down into vulgar nursery rhymes".

Richard Weber rated the ninth episode in the Tagesspiegel as a "cabaret slaughter of half-truths and assertions". Depending on your needs, z. For example, Barack Obama was portrayed as a “bloodthirsty and barbaric murderer” with regard to the drone war , and then “on the subject of Greece [as] a radiant and moral witness that the financial squeezing terrorism must finally be over”.

The media-critical aspects of the program are rated controversially, especially with regard to the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 . With your own stations to go much more gentle than to other media such as Focus and Spiegel , said Richard Weber in Tagesspiegel . Matthias Kalle pointed out - also in the Tagesspiegel  - the contradiction that the institute in its “fact check” of the twelfth episode predominantly refer to “ lying press ” like “Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Tagesspiegel, Die Zeit, Die Welt and some others” , "Who should actually be system-supporting, lazy, mutually depreciating Putin opponents in the understanding of the institution-makers and their fans." Uthoff's contribution to the Ukraine conflict in the fifth episode was described by Stefan Winterbauer on Meedia as "very one-sided [e] "Media scolding, which, however," serves the public expectation perfectly ". According to Katja Thorwarth from the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper , Uthoff, as a Putin fan, is “completely obsessed with the fairy tale of remote-controlled Ukraine” and the media criticism contained in the institution is comparable to Ken Jebsen's conspiracy theories . Reinhard Mohr also accused the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the Ukraine conflict was portrayed too one-sidedly : every hint of criticism of Putin and Russia is avoided, “[with dreamlike security] all misery in the world ends up with Angela Merkel and her Allied warmongers of high finance and Atlantikbrücke. ”The result is the“ involuntary self-caricature of a cabaret that only produces affirmative ideology ”. In contrast, Stefan Kuzmany on Spiegel Online describes the reference to the revolution in Ukraine as "painfully convincing".

David Segler saw in the Frankfurter Rundschau on the occasion of the tenth episode the strength of the institute in the fact that it “takes up the large and complex issues and above all the flood in which they rattle on you [..., abstracts ...] and finally in understandable pictures bring the stage. For the eleventh episode, he praised the good background research, "the results of which are then [placed] in [the] dialogues in such a way that the punchlines just sparkle". He described episode 26 about the car madness as the “great moment of the institution”, in which the dialogue between Uthoff and Wagner “proved to be a suitable form of dialogue and support from display boards as a suitable means of illuminating complex developments and conditions.”

Matthias Kalle complained about the twelfth episode in the Tagesspiegel "stolen gags" and the second rate of the guest cabaret artists.

On the occasion of episode 13 in the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), Ruth Schneeberger praised the fact that the team "attacked everyone, from the ruling to the opposition to the politics of other countries, from the critics to the loyal audience in the hall." as biting as it is funny, from the razor-sharp analysis to the pun. "

Reinhard Mohr criticized the guest appearance of Auschwitz survivor Esther Bejarano in the 15th episode as an artistic oath of revelation : “an act of shameless instrumentalization. The Holocaust as cheap coin, agitprop cabaret, true to the line like in GDR times [...]. At the same time, this left-wing farmer's theater is also a tailor-made convenience product for those who feel better, a wellness bath of moral self-assurance. "

Felix Dachsel also criticized at the time that, in his opinion, the program cultivated an opinionated habitus and crude explanations of the world: “In the institution , the revolution in Ukraine is described as the secret work of American agents and senators, the grand coalition is equated with the SED and the NSA with the Stasi. "

On the occasion of the five-year anniversary of the broadcast at the beginning of 2019, Oliver Hochkeppel described the establishment in the SZ as a “piece of educational satire that has become rare” and regretted that, unlike other cabaret formats, it had “a few blog comments and nice access numbers in the media library”, but more produce hardly any reactions. "Normally after every institution there should be an outcry through the republic if the signs of wear and tear of the system were shown again in detail, from the entanglement of the decision-makers to the priority of individual economic interests over the common good."

Markus Ehrenberg found in the Tagesspiegel that the program of June 2, 2020 was "one of the best satirical programs in the recent past." He particularly praised Horst Evers' video appearance on conspiracy theories and the general educational approach of the institution . The show was "[w] hat drop height, information transfer and differentiation assets relate [...] modern pentathlon, which today-show 'rather shot put [...]." Critics who in the hospital to see the best satire show, arguments have gained.

Controversy over media criticism

In the third episode of April 29, 2014, von Wagner put on the whiteboard memberships of a number of prominent German journalists in NATO- friendly elite networks such as B. the Atlantik-Brücke , which would result in a conflict of interests in reporting , particularly with regard to the Ukraine crisis . In preparation for this article, Uwe Krüger was consulted, who has the power of opinion with his study . The influence of elites on leading media and alpha journalists - a critical network analysis had scientifically analyzed the topic.

In an interview with the HNA, Uthoff replied to the accusation that his criticism of the mass media was reminiscent of "the criticism of the Pegida demonstrators of the allegedly synchronized mainstream press", that it was "the work of journalists" to "differentiate finely", his job as a cabaret artist, on the other hand, “denounces grievances and satirically exaggerate them, sometimes to the limit of pain”. The accusation by journalists against Die Anstalt is therefore not justified. Rather, “the differentiation in the Ukraine crisis [...] in the ' Süddeutsche Zeitung ' and ' Zeit '” is missing . In the institution “they never said that Putin was an angel. It's about starting a civil war [...] in which NATO and the Americans have very specific interests. "

The time -Mitherausgeber Josef Joffe and the time -Journalist Jochen Bittner erwirkten first with the Hamburg Regional Court injunctions against them concerning statements of the consignment. ZDF was forbidden from claiming or spreading that Joffe was a member, advisory board or board of directors of eight instead of seven, and Bittner of three organizations named on the whiteboard. This also led to the removal of the program from the ZDFmediathek . The provisional injunctions were lifted completely by the LG Hamburg on October 6, 2014 in the case of Joffe and in part in the case of Bittner. In the main proceedings against this, lawsuits brought by Joffe and Bittner were initially rejected by the LG Hamburg with regard to the satirical character of the program. On September 9, 2015, the Hamburg Higher Regional Court overturned these judgments on appeal and prohibited the institution from further disseminating or repeating the contested statements. It also forbade the statement that Bittner had contributed to the speech by Federal President Joachim Gauck at the Munich Security Conference . On January 10, 2017, the Federal Court of Justice rejected the judgment of the Hamburg Higher Regional Court and followed the opinion of the first instance that the satirical presentation of a situation may also contain inaccuracies.

The journalist Jan Fleischhauer , who was a member of the Atlantik-Brücke at the time of the broadcast in 2014, accused the format in May 2020 of using conspiracy-theoretical explanations, as they were propagated by critics of the government measures after the outbreak of the corona pandemic .
