The expansion (original title: The Expanse ) is the 52nd episode of the American science fiction television series Enterprise . At the same time, it is the last episode of the second season and the last episode before the series title was renamed Star Trek: Enterprise . The plot takes place on April 24, 2153 and forms the essential basis for the third season , which tells a cross-episode story arc.

action

A small spaceship uses a phaser- like weapon to cut a crack about 4,000 km long, hundreds of meters wide and deep in the earth's crust between Florida and Venezuela ; then it crashes on earth. Earth government estimates of the death toll rise from 1 million to 7 million. Because of the attack gets Captain Archer of Vice Admiral Forrest the order to return to the Enterprise to Earth. While the Enterprise is on its way there, Archer is briefly kidnapped by Suliban and brought into contact by Silik with the leader of the Suliban cabal, who is only visible in his outlines. He explains to Archer that the enemy spaceship has been sent from the future by the species Xindi , who previously learned that their world will be destroyed by humans in the 26th century. Furthermore, he calls on Archer to prevent the development of a new weapon of the Xindi, with which they want to completely destroy the earth, and thus to prevent contamination of the timeline . To do this, it is necessary to go to the "Delphic Expansion", a distant area of space in which, for example, physical laws do not fully apply and which is avoided by many peoples because of their dangerousness. The fact that the Suliban Archer did not warn of the devastating attack only served to underpin the credibility of the Suliban cabal.

The Klingon Duras is given the chance by his Klingon superiors to restore his lost honor. In addition, he declares that he is ready to bring Captain Archer back to the Klingon justice system. Shortly before arriving at Earth, the Enterprise, supported by an additional Starfleet ship, repels an attack by Duras' warship.

Archer can prove to Forrest and the Vulcan ambassador Soval the accuracy of the information he received from the Suliban by clearly dating the age of a fragment of the crashed enemy Xindi spaceship to the distant future. While Starfleet Command allows Archer and the Enterprise to carry out the mission, the Vulcan leadership is extremely skeptical and therefore calls T'Pol back to Vulkan. Since his sister was killed in the attack, Tucker wants revenge on the Xindi.

After the Enterprise has set off for the Delphic Expansion, it repels an attack by the spaceship commanded by Duras. On the way, T'Pol decides against her transfer to take part in the mission and gives up her officer's license. Having reached the limit of expansion, the Enterprise fends off the attack of another Klingon spaceship with a daring flight maneuver and destroys it; its two escort ships have previously turned back in view of the danger of expansion.
