The woman next door (Original: La Femme d'à côté ) is a French film drama with Fanny Ardant and Gérard Depardieu from 1981 and also the penultimate feature film by French director François Truffaut .

action

The marine engineer Bernard Coudray lives with his wife Arlette and their son Thomas in a small town near Grenoble . One day Philippe and Mathilde Bauchard moved into the house next door. When the new neighbors meet, Bernard and Mathilde are, as it were, surprised to see each other again, because they both know each other from before. Eight years ago they ended their love affair, which was characterized by deep passion and a kind of love-hate relationship. Bernard tries to avoid Mathilde at first. When they happen to meet while shopping a short time later, however, there is a kiss that revives their feelings for one another. Regardless of their marital relationships, from now on they meet regularly in an hour hotel.

Mathilde, however, does not want to go on living with a lie on her heart and therefore asks Bernard to end the affair. Hoping they both could become friends, she also decides to catch up on her honeymoon with her husband Philippe. Bernard reacts with jealousy that grows into uncontrolled desire when Mathilde's dress accidentally rips at a garden party and she suddenly appears in her underwear. Bernard cannot control himself and attacks her in front of everyone. Now their spouses also learn the truth about Bernard and Mathilde.

On her trip with Philippe, Mathilde tries to gain distance and to relax emotionally. But although Bernard's emotional outbursts frighten Mathilde, she still longs for him and his love. Even her work on a children's book cannot distract her from her longing in the following years, especially since Bernard again avoids her. She eventually has a nervous breakdown and is admitted to hospital. Since she doesn't seem to be recovering from her depression, even Bernard's wife Arlette asks her husband to visit Mathilde. Meanwhile, Philippe is very concerned about his wife's well-being and therefore arranges the move to downtown Grenoble. After the Bauchards moved out, Bernard's family life seems to return to normal. One night he hears a noise from the empty house next door. He goes over with a flashlight and finds Mathilde, who has already been waiting for him. They kiss and then make love on the floor before Mathilde picks up a pistol and shoots him and then herself.

background

The woman next door , a love story between two people who can neither live with nor without each other, based on the legend of Tristan and Isolde , was staged by François Truffaut with a small baton. He carried the idea of filming the material around with him for a long time, because he was missing the right leading actress. He found her in 1979 in Fanny Ardant when he saw her play on the French television series The Ladies of the Coast . He then invited her to dinner with Gérard Depardieu , with whom he was shooting the film The Last Metro (1980). For Truffaut, it was immediately clear that Depardieu and Ardant would be the ideal cast for his new project.

The shooting took place in Grenoble from April to mid-May 1981. Truffaut took inspiration for the dialogues while filming. He wrote most of the dialogues during breaks on the weekends. At the same time he began a love affair with Ardant, which lasted until his death on October 21, 1984. The daughter Josephine (* 1983) comes from the relationship. After The Woman Next Door , Fanny Ardant also starred in Truffaut's last film, Auf Liebe und Tod (1983), the female lead.

The Woman Next Door premiered in France on September 30, 1981. The film was released in Germany on June 4, 1982.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films said that Truffaut's work illustrated "the tragic story of this 'amour fou' with masterly casualness". The film is "profound, multi-layered and played excellently". Cinema found it “[f] ominous”, as the director “[conjures up] the dark, destructive power of love”. The conclusion was: "Incurably romantic love thriller."

"Staged by Truffaut with masterly nonchalance", judged TV Movie . The television magazine Prisma described the woman next door as an “excellently played love tragedy” that “has nothing of the lightness of a typical Truffaut”: “The style is strict, the colors sparse. The perfectly staged drama takes its course relentlessly with the precision of clockwork. "
