The sweet skin (French original title: La Peau douce ) is a feature film by the French director François Truffaut .

action

Pierre Lachenay is a literary critic and scholar known in France through television . He is married to Franca and has a ten-year-old daughter Sabine with her. He flies to Lisbon to give a lecture entitled Balzac and the Money . Already on the plane he noticed the pretty stewardess Nicole. After the lecture, he runs into her again at night in the elevator of his hotel. He tries to hook up with her and finally meets with her the next day. Pierre falls in love with the fun-loving woman, who is 20 years his junior, and spends a night of love with her. Back in Paris he gets in touch with her and now meets her regularly.

He agrees to travel to Reims to present a film about André Gide . But his real goal is to spend a few days undisturbed with Nicole. However, happiness is spoiled by the organizers of the screening, who are taking up his time. Nicole feels neglected; The first cracks appear in the relationship between the intellectual and the stewardess. Nevertheless, after the lecture evening in Reims you can spend a short time of happiness in a country hotel. But when Pierre calls his wife Franca, he learns that she has tried to contact him and suspects him of cheating.

When he returns home, the marriage seems to have broken up. However, Pierre does not admit the relationship with Nicole. He tells his wife that he needed time to himself. Nevertheless, Franca wants a divorce. Pierre moves into the office of his literary magazine and tries to reorganize his life. He plans to buy an apartment to live in with Nicole. While inspecting the shell, Nicole confesses her doubts about their relationship and declares it over. In the meantime, his wife Franca has discovered photos showing Pierre and Nicole. So the reason was another woman after all. Angry and determined, she drives home and loads a rifle. Pierre calls Ingrid, Franca's best friend, who convinces him to try to win Franca back. However, it no longer reaches them. In the final scene he is sitting in his local pub, where he is shot by Franca.

background

The film is based on a true story. Truffaut's own Paris apartment was used as the filming location for the Lachenay family's apartment. He staged the love story like a crime film that eventually ends with the death of the main character. The music by Georges Delerue supports the dramaturgy effectively. The film doesn't follow the usual patterns for adultery dramas. The main character is an intellectual. His wife is an attractive, passionate woman who is equal to her husband in every way. His lover is a refreshing young woman who doesn't really want to fit into his life. The story takes its course and at the end fills the viewer with pity and anger towards the protagonist.

Reviews

“Truffaut develops the melodramatic material for the critical-analytical description of male behavior between the reality and pleasure principle. [...] A 'classically' staged film that is particularly noticeable due to its seamless assembly. "

Awards

The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964 and received very mixed reactions. The only international award the film received came from Denmark . There he was awarded the Bodil in 1965 for best European film of the year .
