The Cricket is a Soviet melodrama by Samson Samsonow from 1955. It is based on the novella Flattergeist by Anton Chekhov .

action

St. Petersburg around 1900: The superficial Olga Ivanovna regularly surrounds herself in her apartment with painters, musicians and singers, of whom she likes to be celebrated as a muse. Her husband Dymow is a doctor, prepares his dissertation and stays in the background at the meetings. His wife usually ignores him in societies and only lets him appear when the guests are to be invited to dinner. Dymow endures Olga's moods stoically - he knows nothing about art, but believes that things that others would spend a fortune on cannot be “worthless”.

One day, Olga welcomes the aspiring painter Ryabovsky as a new guest in her circle. He falls in love with her, and when she accompanies the painter on a trip to the Volga, he confesses to her that he desires her. She becomes his mistress and they stay together for several months, but soon fall out and Olga returns to Dymow. He welcomes her with open arms and tells her about his dissertation project. Initially interested, Olga falls asleep a short time later while Dymow is speaking. Soon Olga falls back into old patterns, gives company and optionally presents her painting or singing talent in front of the guests. When Dymow tells her that she has successfully completed her doctorate, she doesn't even pretend to be interested.

While Olga soon struggles with self-doubt because Ryabowski drops her and calls her an amateur artist who should be much more likely to become a singer, Dymow treats a boy who has diphtheria . He is infected with him and the doctor and friend Korostelev and a specialist who have been summoned soon realize that Dymow cannot be cured. Only through the actions of colleagues and friends Dymows recognizes Olga that her husband in his field as a luminary was and his loss is a bitter loss for science. She rushes to his sick bed and implores that both of them will have a long time together, but Dymow has already passed away. Korosteljow sums up that Dymow was only there for others and that nobody took care of him and his concerns; Dymow was too good. When the housekeeper asked what should happen next, Korostelev replied that the usual would happen - the housekeepers wash the corpses and take care of the rest.
