The card beater

Die Kartenschlägerin is an operetta in one act by Franz von Suppè from 1862. Only the pseudonym "NN" is known as a librettist.

This second operetta, Suppés, was written for the Theater an der Wien , but it went bankrupt shortly before under the direction of director Pokorny. The operetta had to be reworked for the Theater am Franz-Josefs-Kai , among other things because there was no suitable singer for the title role. This reworking was certainly not the only reason for the failure of this work. The textbook was initially criticized, which was "just as improbable and nonsensical as most of Offenbach's", "but not like this one had something spicy, interesting or at least funny and great". Among other things, the music was felt to be too “heavy for the strength of the house”. After only three performances, the piece disappeared from the program. For a later performance in Graz, Suppé has reworked the operetta, now under the title Pique Dame . The first version, of which no more evidence exists, was evidently changed so much that it can no longer be reconstructed today.
