The Milky Way is a French - Italian feature film by the Spanish director Luis Buñuel , which was first released in France on March 15, 1969. The work had its German premiere on October 6, 1970 in the ARD program .

action

The two clochards Jean and Pierre (the French first names correspond to the German names Johannes and Petrus) from Paris initially make a pilgrimage along the French autoroute A10, the Way of St. James , which is also known as the “Milky Way”, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain . In doing so, they encounter a number of figures, detached from space and time, who embody various teachings within Christianity . In the individual scenes, the different dogmatic and heretical positions within the long history of Christianity are expressed. Incidentally, all religious statements made in the film are, as the credits reveal, taken from the Bible and other writings of the Christian Church.

The Milky Way was considered the heavenly equivalent of the earthly Way of St. James , hence the title of the film.

Quotes

“Two pilgrims in the present on the way to Santiago de Compostela. In the world they cross, time and space are suspended and the proclamation of Christian dogma is all that is spoken of. On the way, the burlesque (but authentic) illustration of the heresies and, amidst the laughter, the dark and passionate search for the truth. "

- Jean-Claude Carrière

“Aside from the authentic situations and doctrinal disputes that appear in the film, for me it is above all a wandering through fanaticism in which everyone clings forcefully and relentlessly to their bit of truth - ready to kill or die for it. I also found that the way the two pilgrims walk can stand for political as well as artistic ideologies. "

- Luis Buñuel

The film received mostly positive reviews and achieved a rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 16 reviews and 84% from the audience with around 2500 votes. At IMDb , the film received 7.5 out of a possible 10 stars with around 6250 ratings. (As of September 21, 2019)

The Protestant Film-Observer draws the following conclusion: “Formally brilliant, but one-sided, completely negativistic, old work that is borne by personal resentment. As a method, Bunuel prefers the enlightening direct attack to the differentiated theological analysis. A valuable basis for discussion, which is recommended to responsible adults. ”Despite all the criticism of the Catholic Church , the lexicon of international films also ultimately comes to a positive assessment:“ The episode revue following a cabaret dramaturgy, which does not omit visions of God and the devil itself in parts as a biting, polemical attempt to settle Buñuel with the errors and mistakes of the Catholic Church.
