Jean-Claude Carrière
Jean-Claude Carrière (born September 19, 1931 in Colombières-sur-Orb , Département Hérault , † February 8, 2021 in Paris ) was a French screenwriter and writer . In 2015 he received an honorary Oscar for his life's work .
Live and act
Carrière began working as a draftsman and writer in the early 1950s. In addition to short stories, he also wrote a so-called dictionary of stupidity and, for the theater, the play L'aide-mémoire and the French version of the American book and theater success Harold and Maude .
The first contact with film came in the course of the 1950s when the director Jacques Tati commissioned him to create novel versions for two of his films. In 1957 Carrière met the director Pierre Étaix , who brought him to film in 1961. Two years later began a regular collaboration with Luis Buñuel , who had returned to France , which lasted until his last film. Carrière's complex manuscripts were created with the Spanish director in exile. He served almost all film genres and wrote the scripts for works by a wide variety of directors such as Miloš Forman , Louis Malle , Jacques Deray , Carlos Saura , Volker Schlöndorff , Andrzej Wajda , Marco Ferreri , Philippe de Broca , Peter Brook and Jean-Luc Godard .
Occasionally Carrière was also seen as an actor, in leading roles in 1971 in the production based on his own novel L'Alliance and in 1993 in the US film The Night and the Moment .
In 1986 he was appointed President of the newly established La Fémis , the film and audiovisual college in Paris.
Jean-Claude Carrière died of natural causes at his home in Paris on February 8, 2021 at the age of 89.
