Stamp pad from the 2002 stamps issued by the Federal Republic of Germany for Documenta11. The year 1963 was erroneously given for documenta III instead of 1964.

The eleventh edition of the documenta exhibition series , Documenta11 , took place from June 8, 2002 to September 15, 2002 in Kassel with the participation of 116 artists and artist groups.

It was designed by the artistic director Okwui Enwezor and a team of six other so-called co-curators as a sequence of five platforms, the fifth and last of which was the actual exhibition in Kassel. The other four essentially consisted of thematic lecture series, symposia and discussion rounds that were held in advance in selected cities around the world:

  • Platform 1: “Democracy as an unfinished process” began in March 2001 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (Institute for Contemporary Art) and was continued in October 2001 at the House of World Cultures in Berlin .
  • Platform 2: “Experiments with Truth: Changing Legal Systems and the Processes of Truth-Finding and Reconciliation” was held in May 2001 at New Delhi's India Habitat Center .
  • Platform 3: “Créolité and Creolization” took place in January 2002 on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia .
  • Platform 4: “Under Siege: Four African Cities, Freetown, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, Lagos” was carried out in March 2002 in Lagos .
  • Platform 5: The actual Documenta exhibition of the artworks in Kassel

The co-curators of Documenta11 were Carlos Basualdo , Ute Meta Bauer , Susanne Ghez , Sarat Maharaj , Mark Nash and Octavio Zaya . Bernd Leifeld was again the managing director of the documenta und Museum Fridericianum Veranstaltungs-GmbH .

Documenta11 attracted over 650,000 paying visitors to Kassel and thus - after 1992 and 1997 - achieved another visitor record.
