Dominique Perrault (born April 9, 1953 in Clermont-Ferrand ) is a French architect .

Life

Perrault studied architecture at the Unité Pédagogique 6 of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris (1978), then urban planning at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées , Paris (1979) and history at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (1980 ). In 1981 he founded his own architectural office in Paris, 1992 in Berlin, 2000 in Luxembourg, 2002 in Barcelona and in Baltimore (USA). Perrault teaches at the ETH Zurich and the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura in Barcelona .

From 1998 to 2001 he was President of the Institut français d'architecture .

In 1984 he gained international fame with the construction of the ESIEE ( École supérieure d'ingénieurs en électronique et électrotechnique ) in Marne-la-Vallée near Paris. In 1989 Perrault won the international competition to build the French National Library . Despite the numerous functional deficiencies in this library, which he was responsible for, Perrault is considered one of the “star architects” in France. He always includes urban planning considerations in his architectural designs. Their strict formalism is often reminiscent of minimalist sculptures.
