The Velodrom is one of the largest event halls in Berlin and is also a cycling track . It is located on Landsberger Allee in the immediate vicinity of the S-Bahn station of the same name in Prenzlauer Berg in the north-eastern district of Pankow . It offers space for 12,000 people and is the center of Berlin cycling . The Berlin Six Day Race (today: Six Day Berlin ) has been held here every year since 1997 .

Like the Max-Schmeling-Halle, the Velodrom is operated by Velomax Berlin Hallenbetriebs GmbH , a subsidiary of the Gegenbauer group of companies.

history

The velodrome was planned by Dominique Perrault as part of the Berlin application for the 2000 Olympic Games . The design was presented in 1992, and construction began in June 1993 - a quarter of a year before the IOC decision, which was in favor of Sydney . The building was completed in 1996. The first event took place on January 23, 1997, the 86th Berlin Six-Day Race. The final completion and official handover took place on September 5, 1997.

The Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle was previously located on the site . With a capacity of around 10,000 people, the multi-purpose hall, which opened in 1950, was the venue for various sports competitions, the meeting place for the first SED party congresses, but also the setting for music concerts. The hall was closed in 1992 and demolished in favor of the planned new building.

In the meantime, the hall was called BerlinArena for three years . After a legal dispute with the operator of the Arena Berlin in Berlin-Alt-Treptow , it was decided in December 2003 to rename it back to the original name Velodrom .

architecture

The velodrome and the swimming and diving hall in the Europa Sportpark are next to each other and are almost completely sunk into a five-meter-high heaped landscape plinth, so that there are no faces or facades. The spectacular roof plate constructions, clad with stainless steel mesh, protrude as flat panes a meter from the park-like plateau, which is planted with various types of apple trees. Outside stairs lead down through this area to the entrances.

The actual size of the hall and especially the roof structure contrast with this inconspicuous exterior: the velodrome is circular and has a diameter of 142 meters. The span is 115 meters, making it the largest self-supporting steel roof structure in Europe. The roof structure itself is 13 meters high, 16 reinforced concrete round pillars support 3500 tons of steel. The total costs for the plant amounted to about 290 million DM.

Velodrome

The cycle track in the Velodrome is made of Siberian spruce and 250 meters long, so it meets the international standards of the UCI World Cycling Association . Before the UEC European Rail Championships in 2017, the 20-year-old runway was completely replaced and 200 slatted rings made of Siberian spruce with a total length of 55 kilometers were laid. The substructure and geometry were retained. In addition, the railway has been adapted to the latest requirements in terms of safety and technology. The Senate Department for Home Affairs and Sport provided up to 1.6 million euros for this.

In 2007, 2011, 2014 and 2019 the German Track Cycling Championships and in 1999 the UCI Track World Championships were held in the Velodrom . The European Railway Championships took place here in 2017 and the Track Cycling World Cup the following year . The Berlin Six Day Race (now: Six Day Berlin ) has been held here every year since 1997 .
