The team pursuit is a discipline of track cycling . The four-person teams are also called track fours .

Rules and course of the race

The mode is the same as in the ones chase . Here, however, two teams of four drivers each (for women up to and including 2013 three drivers) compete against each other. The uniform distance for women, men and juniors is 4000 m (up to and including 2013 for women 3000 m). The time measurement takes place when the third driver of a team crosses the finish line, so one driver per team may be eliminated in the course of the race (e.g. due to exhaustion) without endangering the team's result. Team pursuit is considered the supreme discipline of track cycling because, in addition to the performance of each individual team member, perfect coordination is of decisive importance. A considerable amount of training is required before the change in leadership and rear-wheeling can be carried out optimally at a minimal distance.

In contrast to races with a mass start, in which the drivers drive at a distance of 30 cm to more than one meter on the rear wheel of the vehicle in front, the ideal distance between the drivers of such a "four-in-hand" is 15-20 cm. When changing the lead, you make clever use of the leveling: the leader swerves to the right in the curve and because of the superelevation loses speed very quickly, which he regains almost completely from the then higher positional energy by immediately pivoting back down and joins at the end.

At World Cups , World Championships and Olympic Games there is first a qualification. The first eight teams qualify for an intermediate round with the sixth team of qualification racing against the seventh, the fifth against the eighth, the second against the third and the fastest against the fourth. The winners of the last two races of the intermediate round contest the final for first place. The remaining teams qualify for third place in the final according to the times in the intermediate round.

Records

The current record holder for the men is the Danish selection with Lasse Norman Hansen , Julius Johansen , Frederik Rodenberg and Rasmus Pedersen , who improved the record held by Australia on February 27, 2020 at the World Championships in Berlin to 3: 44.672 minutes.

For women, the record run of August 13, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro applies , in which the British team with Katie Archibald , Laura Trott , Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand drove 4: 13.260 minutes.

Men

Until 1991, the World Championship competition in team pursuit was reserved for amateurs and was not played during the years of the Olympic Games in 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992. After that, the separation between professionals and amateurs was lifted. Since then, the World Track Championships have been held in the new "Elite" category.
