Andreas Walzer (born May 20, 1970 in Homburg ) is a former German racing cyclist and has been the sports director of several cycling teams since 2012 .

Athletic career

Walzer won the 1991 world championship in the team pursuit. In addition, he was runner-up in the road and track four and two German champions in the individual time trial .

At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona waltz was Olympic champion in track four in the Team Pursuit

In the 1993 season he played the Rad-Bundesliga for the RSG Frankfurt.

Andreas Walzer was able to win a total of eleven German championship titles between 1987 and 1999. In 1994 he won the race around the old town of Nuremberg . He also achieved stage victories in the Lower Saxony , Hesse , Bavaria , Rhineland-Palatinate Tour and the Saxony Tour .

Andreas Walzer was also successful internationally. a. Stages at the Tour de Liège , the Tour de la Region Wallonne , the Tour de Langkawi and a stage as well as the overall ranking at the OZ-Wielerweekend in the Netherlands and the Tour de Moselle in France.

After the sport

Due to chronic myocarditis, Walzer had to end his active career in 2001 at the age of 31. He then worked as a cycling expert at ARD for ten years during the Tour de France and the Deutschland Tour .

Walzers Heimatverein are the Radlerfreunde Homburg , where he looks after young talents. In 2008 he also took over the Bundesliga U-23 team of FC Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar Mainz , where he coordinated the racing operations, especially the U-23 Bundesliga team, and represented the club as sporting director. In September 2009 he moved to the MLP cycling team from Wiesloch, which merged with the Bergstrasse-Jenatec team for the 2014 season .

After finishing his active cycling career, Walzer completed a degree in business administration . From 2001 to 2012 he worked for the Christian Youth Village Association (CJD) in Homburg as head of administration. The company Canyon Bicycles in Koblenz has been his employer since May 2012 , where he is responsible for looking after the racers of the Katusha cycling team , the Topeak Ergon Racing Team and the Triathlon team and their equipment.

Private

Andreas Walzer has been married since 1998, lives in Homburg and has two children.

Awards

In 1992 Walzer was honored with the citizen's medal in his hometown Homburg for his services to Homburg sport. As the Olympic champion of the 1992 Olympic Games, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf from Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker on June 23, 1993 .
