The Dornbirner First (also Firstgrat , Firstkamm or just First ) is a mountain ridge in Vorarlberg . According to the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps as well as the international standardized orographic division of the Alps (SOIUSA) , it is one of 11 or 13 subgroups of the Bregenzerwald Mountains .

Name derivation

First means the " first " or " supreme " and is found in a similar form and meaning z. B. in engl. : " First " ( angels .: " Fyrst ") or in swedish : " först (a) " and in this context is also related to the word prince . In mountain ridges, “First” denotes a series of peaks of a mountain range and is therefore another word for mountain ridge (e.g. Churfirsten ), but can also designate a single, protruding mountain (e.g. First mountain ( 1617  m above sea level). A. ) in Fraxern or First in the Bernese Oberland ( 2167  m above sea level ) or hill (e.g. Einfirst in Hohenems ).

The word "First" generally designates a ridge edge and can be found e.g. B. also as a term for the upper cutting edge of two roof surfaces ( roof ridge ), in geology it describes the layer in direct contact with the reference horizon ( hanging wall) and in mining the tunnel roof ( ridge ).

Location and boundaries

The ridge lies like a crossbar between the rear Bregenzerwald (height Mellau ) and the lower Alpine Rhine valley (height Dornbirn ) and extends from southwest to northeast. The border between the Dornbirn district and the Bregenz district runs partly directly on the ridge of the Firstes . The borders of the municipalities of Dornbirn, Mellau and Reuthe meet at the Hangköpfle .

The delimitation of the Dornbirner First runs clockwise along the line Hottersattel - Rotenbach - Bregenz Ach - Mellenbach - Haslachbach - Fluhlöchle - Gunzenach . The Hottersattel forms the connection to the Hochälpele-Weißenfluh group and the Fluhlöchle to the Freschen group .

Development, use and tourism

Plans to create a public transport connection to the Bregenzerwald through the First or to develop the First for tourism with a cable car were discussed again and again, but never reached a specific planning phase.

Cultivated Alps lie on both sides of the ridge, most of which are still bumped in summer today.

The First and each of its peaks require surefootedness, a head for heights and alpine equipment with good mountain boots. The entire ridge can be walked lengthways in about eight to ten hours (with ascent). Good physical condition is required. Particular caution is required when it is wet.

The closest hiking base is the Freschenhaus ( 1846  m above sea level ).
