The gray-brown, gray to brown crusts on the thorn branches of graduation towers are called thorn stones ( popularly known as "Salinenstein") . The so-called thorn walls of the trickle packs are filled with thorn branches of the blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa , blackthorn ). The sparingly soluble carbonates of calcium ( lime ), magnesium ( dolomite ) and calcium sulfate ( gypsum ) as well as color-giving carbonates of iron and manganese are usually deposited .
