Erwin Bünning

Erwin Bünning (born January 23, 1906 in Hamburg ; † October 4, 1990 in Tübingen ) was a German biologist and university professor.

Career

From 1931 Bünning was a private lecturer at the University of Jena , in 1938 he became an associate professor at the University of Königsberg and in 1941 at the University of Strasbourg . From 1945 he was a full professor at the University of Cologne and from 1946 full professor and director of the Botanical Institute and Botanical Garden of the University of Tübingen .

Bünning's main research area was the photoperiodic reactions of plants. Bünning is considered to be the discoverer of the “ internal clock ” of organisms and, together with Jürgen Aschoff and Colin Pittendrigh, the founder of chronobiology .
