Dorothy McGuire
Dorothy Hackett McGuire (born June 14, 1916 in Omaha , Nebraska , † September 13, 2001 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actress .
Life
McGuire began her acting career in New York in the late 1930s . Their first major appearance on Broadway was her as she for 1938 Martha Scott in the Thornton Wilder -Stück Our Town ( Our Town was able to step in). In 1941 she played the title role in the play Claudia , two years later she made her cinema debut in the film adaptation of this comedy. She was under contract with star producer David O. Selznick until 1946 .
Although she was able to convince in some very notable films in the 1940s, she never became one of the glamorous Hollywood stars of those years - also because McGuire often played intimidated and tragic, but at the same time mostly very kind-hearted women. She embodied a wallflower in the love drama With The Eyes of Love , a dumb maid at risk of death in The Spiral Staircase and the wife of an alcoholic in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn . She was nominated for an Oscar in 1948 for her portrayal in Elia Kazan's film Taboo of the Just . In the 1950s, McGuire was mainly seen in mother roles, for example as the devout wife of Gary Cooper in Alluring Temptation and as the mother of Sandra Dee in the melodrama Summer Island . For her portrayal in Alluring Temptation , she was recognized by the National Board of Review in the category Best Actress . The romantic love film Three Coins in the Fountain , which was released in 1954, was awarded two Oscars and was nominated for best film, was also very successful .
In the star-studded Bible film The Greatest Story Of All Time , McGuire starred as Mary , the mother of Jesus, in 1965 . In the 1970s she played the mother of the Jordache brothers ( Peter Strauss and Nick Nolte ) in the hit television series Reich und Arm . After the death of her husband, she slowly withdrew from the acting business and was most recently in front of the camera in 1990 for two television films.
Dorothy McGuire married the photographer John Swope (1908–1979) in 1943. They had a son and a daughter. It was often criticized that her name was not mentioned in the 2002 television broadcast of the Academy Awards in the obituaries (In Memoriam).
