The McGuire Sisters were a pop vocal trio that had a number of hits in the 1950s and early 1960s.
history
The three sisters Christine (1926–2018), Dorothy (1928–2012) and Phyllis McGuire (* 1931) from Middletown (Ohio) began to sing together in the church choir early on. Then in 1949 they were hired by the military and toured various hospitals and barracks. During this time they expanded their repertoire to different pop standards of the time. After the singers finished their tour, they decided to appear on Arthur Godfrey's talent show in 1951 . Godfrey loved the band and included them in his regular morning program, where they performed for seven years.
Only a short time after being included in Godfrey's show, the McGuire Sisters were offered a recording contract with Decca Records by Milt Gabler . It wasn't until 1954 that her first single hit the pop charts. Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight , originally by the Spaniels , came up to number 7. This was followed by a cover of the Ivory Joe Hunter song It May Sound Silly (number 11) and the # 10 single He , a cover by Al Hibbler . At the end of the year, the three sisters had their greatest cover success when they brought the Moonglows song Sincerely to the top of the pop charts.
In 1955, Do You Remember When? on the market, an album that consisted only of covers from the 1930s. In 1957, the McGuire Sisters had their second # 1 hit with Sugartime . After that, the success began to wear off. The trio had a few smaller hits in the early 1960s and released an album on ABC-Paramount in 1965 . But when the successes finally failed to materialize, the McGuire Sisters separated in 1968 after an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. In the mid-1970s, the band reunited again and in 2001 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame .
