Durango ( Navajo Kinłání ) is a city in the US state of Colorado , USA . With 16,887 inhabitants (as of 2010) the Home Rule Municipality Durango in La Plata County is the most populous settlement and also its county seat . Tourist attractions are the nearby ski areas, a historic railway that commutes between Silverton and Durango, and Mesa Verde National Park, 36 miles away . Durango is also a popular base for hunting in the surrounding area and is known for excellent fly fishing in the Animas River and San Juan River . These rivers are also popular with kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts.

The Durango-La Plata County regional airport is served by Delta Air Lines , Lynx Aviation ( Frontier Airlines ), United Express ( United Airlines ) and US Airways , among others .

Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The city was established in September 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad to service the San Juan Mining District. It was named after the Spanish city of Durango . The word Durango is derived from the Basque word "Urango" and means something like "city of water".

The city was officially founded on April 27, 1881.

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a museum railroad that connects Durango with the historic mining town of Silverton . Steam locomotives run on the route and the rolling stock is from the 1920s and some of it is even older. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1961 and is on the National Register of Historic Places .

In 1990 the first mountain bike world championships took place in Durango .

In 1992 the USA Chess Championship took place in Durango. The winner was the US chess player Patrick Wolff.

Durango's population was 86.84% White , 0.50% Black or African American , 5.51% Native American , 0.74% Asian , 0.11% Pacific Islander , 4.12% said other races belong to and 2.17% named two or more races. 10.31% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Durango were distributed to 5492 households out of which 22.4% were living in children under 18 years of age. 34.2% of households were married, 9.4% had a female head of household without a husband, and 52.6% were not families. 31.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.0% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.83 people.

The urban population was divided into 16.6% minors, 26.1% 18–24 year olds, 27.2% 25–44 year olds, 19.4% 45–64 year olds and 10.7% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 women there were 104.1 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 103.8 men.

The median household income in Durango was 34,892 US dollars and the median family income 50,814 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 31,812 versus $ 25,022 for women. The per capita income in Durango was $ 19,352. 17.2% of the population and 7.3% of families had an income below the poverty line , of which 11.2% of minors and 8.9% of those aged 65 and over were affected.
