EHC Veltheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The EHC Veltheim was an ice hockey club from the Winterthur district of Veltheim and a former participant in Serie A, the third highest league in Switzerland at the time .

The association existed from 1933 until its merger with EHC Winterthur in 1963.

history

EHC Veltheim was founded in 1933. The club then won the first game against local rivals EHC Winterthur. The club was a regular participant in the third-highest league and regularly placed in the top ranks. In 1947, Walter Dürst, a well-known international name, played with EHC Veltheim during his training in Winterthur. The closest to promotion came in 1956, but in the decisive game at home on the Schützenweiher in front of 1,200 spectators they had to admit defeat 1: 2 against the favored HC Servette Geneva , who was promoted to the National League B for the first time .

The construction of the Zelgli ice rink in 1957 changed the situation with the available ice surfaces in the city. The EHC Veltheim played the first game in the new stadium with the cup game against the NLB club EHC Kleinhüningen on December 17, 1957, even if the official opening was not until the new year with a game against EHC Lugano in front of 3,600 spectators the team also lost. But the construction of the Zelgli did not necessarily improve the situation of the Veltemer. Compared to the EHC Winterthur, the Veltheimers were allocated worse training times and less ice rink, so that, under the leadership of long-time President Konrad Hagenbucher, plans were drawn up for their own ice hockey stadium with a curling lane in the back of today's campsite. However, these plans failed due to the finances, such a project would have cost millions.

At the same time, the Zelgli operators increased the merger pressure with EHC Winterthur, which Veltheim was critical of, as they were better placed than EHC Winterthur for most of the time. The proposed merger in 1962 was rejected by the EHC Winterthur, as it was able to stay at the green table one season longer in the NLB, but a year later this obstacle was also cleared with the relegation of the city club. On May 30, 1963, the EHC Winterthur and the EHC Veltheim merged to form the successor club Rot-Weiss Winterthur . In the event of a separation, the EHCV blocked its association assets for another 5 years before Rot-Weiss Winterthur had access to them.

matchfield

The club usually played on the Schützenweiher on the Rosenberg, but also for two seasons in Winterthur on the tennis courts of the then tennis department of FC Winterthur (today TC Schützenwiese). In the first preparatory phase, the Middle Teuchelweiher was also used , which was frozen in front of the Schützenweiher due to its size. Depending on the duration of the winter, the season had to be carried out in a shorter time.

It was not until the Zelgli ice rink was built in 1957 that the club played in a real stadium.
