Eckart Olshausen

Eckart Olshausen (born October 16, 1938 in Basel ) is a German ancient historian .

He studied Latin , Ancient Greek and Ancient History at the universities in Erlangen , Göttingen and Kiel . Among his academic teachers were Helmut Berve , Horst Braunert , Erich Burck , Karl Deichgräber , Hans Diller , Alfred Heubeck , Alfred Heuss , Reinhold Merkelbach , Otto Seel and Hans Strohm . The doctorate with a thesis on Rome and Egypt from 116 to 51 BC Chr. Took place in 1963 with Berve in Erlangen, 1965 the state examination. From 1963 to 1970, Olshausen was a research assistant at Horst Braunert's chair for ancient history at Kiel University. From 1970 to 1973 he was Academic Councilor for Ancient History at the University of Stuttgart , during which time he completed his habilitation in 1972 with the thesis The Hellenistic King Emissaries. Prosopography and contributions to the Hellenistic envoy system . Olshausen was an adjunct professor until 1976, and since then he has been a full professor and chair holder in Stuttgart until his retirement. His successor was Peter Scholz in 2008 .

Olshausen is an expert in historical geography of ancient times . Together with Holger Sonnabend he is the initiator and organizer of the Stuttgart Colloquium on the Historical Geography of Antiquity . He was also an employee of the Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East . He is co-editor of the Orbis Terrarum magazine and has contributed to classical antiquity as the author of Paulys Realencyclopadie . He was director of the Historical Institute in Stuttgart several times, from 1974 to 1976 and 1984 to 1986 Dean of the Faculty of History, Social and Economic Sciences, 1996 to 1998 Vice Rector for Teaching and 2000 to 2003 member of the University Council of the University of Stuttgart.
