Ed Kelly

Edwin "Ed" Kelly (* 4. October 1935 in Wharton (Texas) ; † 4. February 2005 in Oakland ) was an American jazz - pianist , organist and teacher.

Live and act

Ed Kelly was considered a legendary figure on the jazz scene in Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area . His musical roots are in gospel music ; He made his first appearances as a pianist in his father's church in Texas. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Oakland, where he worked all his life (except for his military service, which he did in Fort Devens, Massachusetts and part of his student days). After studying at the San Francisco Conservatory , he graduated from the University of the Pacific , Berklee College of Music and California State University, Hayward .

For a long time he was a teacher at Laney College, where he ran jazz camps. His students included u. a. Michele Rosewoman . He played with John Handy and Bobby Hutcherson . He has also appeared with guest musicians in Northern California such as Nat Adderley , Jimmy Witherspoon , Sonny Stitt , Roland Kirk , Milt Jackson , Dexter Gordon , Bobby McFerrin and Abbey Lincoln and was involved in recordings by Michael White ( Land Of Spirit And Light , Go With The Flow ), Art Pepper ( Renascence , 1975), Bruce Forman, Robert Stewart and the singer Sugar Pie DeSanto with. Together with Pharoah Sanders he led a session in 1978, including a. with a duet by Sanders / Kelly on Sam Cooke's "You Send Me". The album was released on the Evidence label - coupled with other 1992 material by Kelly with local musicians .

Prizes and awards

Kelly received the Bammie Award for Best Jazz Pianist in the Bay Region in 1982 ; he was also recognized as best jazz artist at the Jay Payton All-Stars Award Presentations in 1978, 1986 and 1990. He was inducted into the Northern California Blues Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2002 he was honored at the San Francisco Jazz Festival .
