Edith Carlmar (born November 15, 1911 in Oslo as Edith Mary Johanne Mathiesen ; † May 17, 2003 ibid) was a Norwegian actress, production manager and Norway's first female film director. Between 1949 and 1959 she made 10 feature films, all of which were box office hits , including Norway's first film Noir Døden er et kjærtegn (Death is a caress, 1949). Liv Ullmann first appeared in a leading role with her last film Ung flukt (The Wayward Girl, 1959) . Edith Carlmar is described as the most successful Norwegian film director. Her films mostly put self-confident women at the center of an erotically charged plot.

Life

Carlmar grew up in a poor family in the working class district of Oslo (then: Kristiania) under difficult economic conditions. At times she had to live with foster parents because her mother could not raise the money she needed to raise her up. However, there were many artists and actors around her mother, so that she was able to make contact with the Oslo artist scene at an early age. She took dance classes at an early age and made her first appearance in the variety scene in Kongshavn Bad in Oslo when she was 15. A little later she met Otto Carlmar , an acquaintance of her mother, whom she married three years later. Otto Carlmar should also produce all of her films. From 1936 she was engaged at the Det Nye Teater in Oslo and worked there for 17 years. She met the Norwegian director Tancred Ibsen through her colleague Lillebil Ibsen . Her interest in film was quickly aroused and Ibsen hired her as a production secretary for his film Tørres Snørtevold (1940).

During the Second World War , Edith Calmar switched several times between working in the theater and in film. She was the production manager for several films, including Bastard og Vigdis (director Helge Lunde), Hansen og Hansen (1941, director Alfred Maurstad ) and D'ække tel å tru (director Toralf Sandø). In 1943 she withdrew completely from the nazified film production, but returned to film life after 1946 as a production manager for the film Et spøkelse forelsker seg  (director Tancred Ibsen ).

In 1946 she received a scholarship from the Kommunale Kinematografers Landsforbund (KKL) and traveled to Great Britain to study directing and production management. There she stayed for three months to study at Denham Studios near London , where she followed the recording of Roy Boulting's film Fame is the Spur (1947) with Michael Redgrave as the leading actor.

In 1949 Edith and Otto Calmar founded the production company Carlmar Film A / S with Edith as director and Otto as producer. They began writing, directing and producing a total of 10 films over a period of ten years. Nine of these films were produced by Carlmar Film A / S, the film Slalom under heaven ( Slalom under the Sky ) by Polar Film A / S. She had also produced script and video for 7 documentaries.

After 1959 Edith Carlmar worked as a director for short films, as a writer and librarian at the Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo before she retired at the age of 70. Edith Carlmar died on May 17, 2003 at the age of 92.
