Life

Liv Ullmann was born in Tokyo. Her father, Ernst Viggo Ullmann, worked as a Norwegian aeronautical engineer for an American company, her mother Janna Erbe Lund was a bookseller. In 1941 the family moved to Canada . Shortly before the end of the war (1945), the father died of an accident at work with an airplane propeller two years earlier. After the end of the war, Ullmann returned to Norway with her mother and sister, where they settled in Trondheim . Liv Ullmann completed an acting training , including in London , and applied several times to the drama school of the National Theater in Oslo to no avail . In 1960 she was finally accepted as a member of the National Theater ensemble.

Ullmann was already a well-known theater actress in her home country when she met the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman in the mid-1960s. Under his direction and alongside Bibi Andersson , she played a silent stage actress in Persona (1966). The following films, some of them alongside Max von Sydow , made her internationally known. Ullmann and Bergman also became a couple privately. In 1966 she gave birth to a daughter, who later became a writer, Linn Ullmann . They separated after five years but continued to work together. She appeared for the first time in a non- Scandinavian film with Cold Sweat (1970) . She achieved world star status with the emigrant epics Emigranten (for which she was nominated with an Oscar ) and Das neue Land (1971–1972). In 1974 she said about her personality and her impact as an actress: “I think people can identify with me. In a way, I'm ordinary. Don't mistake me for a Hollywood star . Maybe that's my strength. "

In addition to other roles in Bergman films, including the successful television series Scenes from a Marriage (1973), she has appeared in numerous international film and theater productions. In 1975 she played Nora or A Puppet's House for the first time at a theater in the USA with her portrayal of Nora from Henrik Ibsen . She received the 1979 Outer Critics Circle Award for her acting work in Eugene O'Neill's play Anna Christie . She also got involved with UNICEF and other charitable organizations, for which she was awarded the Four Freedoms Award in 1984.

In 1992 Ullmann made her feature film debut as a director in the film drama Sofie , which received several awards. She was able to build on this success with Die Faulosen in 2000. The film, based on a script by Bergman, was shown in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival . They reunited their directorial work with the Bergman actors von Sydow and Erland Josephson and Bergman's cameraman Sven Nykvist . After 25 years, she also appeared again in a Bergman film with Sarabande (2003), which was to be the director's last.

In 1998 she was awarded the honorary professorship of the state of Schleswig-Holstein “in recognition and in recognition of her outstanding services to the support of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck as a cultural bridge in the Baltic Sea region” . In December 2004 she received the European Film Prize for her “outstanding contribution to world cinema”.

Liv Ullmann was married twice, first to the psychiatrist Hans Jacob Stang (1960–1965) and later to the realtor Donald Saunders (1985–1995). In 2002, doctors diagnosed her with a stroke and a life-threatening ventricle opening. She recovered completely after an operation. Her memoirs appeared in 1976 under the title Changes . Another autobiography appeared in 1985 under the title Tides . The pianist and author Ketil Bjørnstad summarized conversations with her in 2005, which were published under the title Livslinjer ( Eng . Paths of Life ).
