Eduard Hambardsumjan ( Armenian Էդուարդ Համբարձումյան ; Russian Эдуард Андраникович Амбарцумян ; born February 23, 1986 in Sochi ) is an Armenian boxer who only started for Russia and since 2007 for Armenia. He was European light welterweight champion in Liverpool in 2008 .

Career

Hambardsumjan started under the name Eduard Ambartsumjan (Russian spelling of his name) until mid-2007 for Russia and since then for Armenia. In 2003 he started for Russia at the Junior European Championships in Warsaw and finished there in featherweight behind Adrian Alexander from Romania , but before the eventual world champion of the amateurs Frankie Gavin from England the 2nd place. In 2004 he achieved an even greater success, because he was even junior world champion in featherweight in Jeju, South Korea . It took him five wins. In the final, he defeated Argenis Mendez from the Dominican Republic on points (32:27).

In 2005 he finished 5th in the Russian championship after losing points to Shafidin Alachwerdiew in the lightweight. He did not appear on missions for Russia between 2005 and 2007. At the 2007 World Cup in Chicago he was then for the first time in action for Armenia . He reached the 5th place, which also meant qualification for the Olympic Games in Beijing .

In 2008 he won the 27th Box Am light welterweight tournament in Valladolid . In the final he defeated Gyula Kate from Hungary on points (5: 1). At the Olympic Games in Beijing he met Felix Diaz from the cathedral in his first fight . Rep. And was subject to this quite surprisingly clearly on points (4:11). It was little consolation for him that this Felex Diaz even became Olympic champion .

After this disappointment, Hambardsumjan started in November 2008 at the European Championships in Liverpool . He was in excellent shape there and became the new European champion with five wins. On the way there he defeated u. a. the German Slawa Kerber on points (11: 4) and won the final battle over Gyula Kate by breaking off in the 1st round.
