Eduard Friedrich Ludwig Messow (born August 9, 1828 in Wernigerode ; † March 24, 1911 ) was a German architect and construction clerk who worked in the County of Wernigerode , but also presented a multi-volume topographical work on the Kingdom of Prussia .

Life

He was the son of Count Ludwig Messow, a builder from Stolberg . After completing his school education in Wernigerode, he initially started an apprenticeship as a surveyor. As a state surveyor, he was sworn in by the Magdeburg government in 1849. After further training, he rose to become a government master builder in Magdeburg .

During this time he created the multi-volume basic work Topographical-Statistical Handbook of the Prussian State in Magdeburg .

At the beginning of 1863 he entered the service of the Stolberg Counts in Wernigerode in the Harz region. The regent at that time , Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode , was still under the tutelage of his uncle Botho at that time, but in that year he took over the administration of his possessions in the mediatized county of Wernigerode .

After Eduard Messow's father retired in Wernigerode as a builder from the Stolberg family, he took over this position and on May 1, 1865 received a lifelong permanent position from Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode.

On April 28, 1868 Eduard Messow married Helene born in Schöppenstedt . Hindersin (born February 24, 1839), whose father was the farmer Wilhelm Hindersin and worked as an economic inspector in Meyendorf Monastery. In the same year there were disputes with the builder Carl Frühling, who was employed at Wernigerode Castle . All work on the castle was then left to the latter alone, while Messow was responsible for the other Stolberg buildings within the county of Wernigerode. To distinguish it, he was given the title of "Count of Stolbergian Building Inspector " in 1869 . As such he was at the same time the Count of Stolberg Chamber assessor .

In 1884 he was appointed Count and from 1890 Princely Stolberg Chamber and Building Councilor.

Due to increasing eye weakness, Eduard Messow was forced to apply for his retirement from Prince Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode by April 1, 1898 at the latest, which was approved because Messow was already 70 years old. His successor as a builder in the county of Wernigerode was Paul Kilburger .

A large number of new buildings in the county of Wernigerode still bear witness to Messow's activity today. These include, for example, the church in Schierke or the observation tower on the Brocken, which was destroyed in 1945.
