Ein Gauner & Gentleman (original title The Old Man & the Gun ) is a crime comedy by David Lowery that was released in selected US cinemas on September 28, 2018 and in German cinemas on March 28, 2019. The film is based on a true story and is based on a newspaper article of the same name by David Grann in the New Yorker from 2003, in which he reports on the criminal Forrest Tucker , who became known as an escape artist .

The aging bank robber Forrest Tucker had managed to break out of prison 16 times in the past. He still hasn't stopped robbing banks, which he carries out with two companions. He does not use a mask and is noticeable for his politeness. He often only indicates the possession of a weapon. Detective John Hunt finds new motivation for his work in the case. He finds out about Tuckers, but when he meets him personally in a restaurant, he does not arrest him. Tucker made friends with Jewel, who at first didn't believe him that he was a bank robber. When he is finally arrested, she stands by him and visits him in prison. She advises him not to attempt any further escape. After serving his sentence, he lives with Jewel on their farm. One day he tells her that he has to go away for a minute. He calls Hunt, who asks if he's okay. Tucker replies that it will be in a moment and goes to a bank to rob her.

Staff and biographical background

Directed by David Lowery . The film is based on a newspaper article of the same name by David Grann im New Yorker from 2003, which Lowery used for his script. In it, Grann reported on the criminal Forrest Tucker , who became known as an escape artist , who was first imprisoned at the age of 15 and spent most of his life in prisons. Tucker had successfully broken out 18 times in his life, and his escape attempts were exposed 12 more times. Once he even escaped from Alcatraz. Tucker died in the Federal Correctional Institution, Fort Worth, a year after Grann's article was published in May 2004, at the age of 83.

In the film, Forrest Tucker is played by Robert Redford . The Oscar winner said of his role: "It was wonderful for me to play the character at this point in my life." In the summer of 2018, Redford also announced that this would be the last film role of his career. Casey Affleck plays detective John Hunt, who is on his heels, but at the same time is fascinated by Forrest's skill. Sissy Spacek plays Jewel, Tucker's girlfriend.

The German dubbing was done by Lutz Riedel , commissioned by TaunusFilm Synchron GmbH, Berlin.

Filming took place in Ohio , Texas , Kentucky and Michigan . In Ohio, shooting was in downtown Hamilton , where filming began in early April 2017, in Blue Ash , on a highway and in the Blue Jay Restaurant in Cincinnati , and in May 2017 in a bank on Monmouth Street in Newport a gas station in Bethel and Dayton , where the Liberty Tower served as a backdrop and was filmed in the Liberty Savings Bank buildings on West Second Street in May 2017. In Texas, the film was shot in Fort Worth , including at the Worthington Bank and the Bank Stockyards and in the Leonard Subway Tunnels. In Texas, prison scenes were also filmed in the Tarrant County Belknap Jail Facility in Fort Worth, where Forrest Tucker was last imprisoned and died in May 2004, and other prison scenes in Jackson . Filming was finished in June 2017. Joe Anderson acted as cameraman .

Film music and publication

The soundtrack was composed by Daniel Hart , who already worked in this capacity for Lowery's last film, A Ghost Story . The soundtrack to the film, which contains a total of 22 pieces of music, including by The Kinks, Scott Walker and Jackson C. Frank, was released by Varese Sarabande on October 5, 2018.

Fox Searchlight secured the distribution rights for North America and the United Kingdom. Fox Searchlight released a first trailer in June 2018. The film premiered on August 31 at the Telluride Film Festival and on September 10, 2018 at the Toronto International Film Festival . It was also shown in September 2018 at the Leipzig Film Art Fair, and shortly afterwards at the Zurich Film Festival . On September 28, 2018, it was shown in selected US cinemas and in German cinemas on March 28, 2019.

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany the film is FSK 6 .

Reviews

So far, the film has received approval from 92 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 7.6 out of a possible 10 points.

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts thinks that it is a classic, disarming, irresistible charm that Robert Redford throws onto the screen with unheard-of ease and which, if necessary, would carry the entire film on its own. In addition to the great leading actor, director David Lowery and his co-stars Casey Affleck and Sissy Spacek also delivered great performances. Petersen also notes that The Old Man And The Gun would pass as a film from 1981 if the age of the actors did not reveal it and sums it up: "A wonderfully complementary double of protagonists and staging."

Gerhard Midding from epd Film writes that the impression of intimacy is due to the fact that Lowery shot the film on 16mm. This format falls out of time, and the graininess of the pictures is gently combined with the age spots on the hands of his protagonists. The rich contrast of the film, in which the dark appears soft and warm, concentrates the gaze on the faces, Midding continues.

A review by SWR2 states that the story is the least important thing about this film, because it is the perfect example of what America calls a “star vehicle”: “A very undisguised occasion for an extremely popular actor like Redford as easily as possible, and to give him plenty of opportunity to simply be in the picture and to show himself from his best sides. ”The review also says what distinguishes Robert Redford and the character he plays is something Forgotten, yet very timeless, that has nothing to do with old school and yesterday's behavior: “Elegance and nonchalance. It is the joy of craftsmanship that also characterizes this film itself, which actually looks like that elegant cinema from the 60s or 70s when Redford's career began. “Films like this would no longer be made today because the world and Hollywood are different would have changed.
